The discrimination law, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, covers discrimination of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin for the workforce, yet surprisingly, men still receive greater pay than women of the same field. Why is it that women get shafted when it comes to their salary? Why do they fall in the gap? Why does race affect the salary of employees? During an interview, employers are searching for those who can accomplish the daily tasks that are required of the applicant. However, the most important thought shared between the employer and the job candidate is the money. One is thinking “How much do I have to pay out to have him/her on board?” while the other is wondering “How much am I going to receive?” Although the pay is an important factor, when selecting the right company to work for one should do prior research to see how their employees are treated. Therefore, it is important for women to research all the company’s policies, but most importantly, women should take into consideration the bi-laws that apply to maternity leave. A woman shouldn’t fear the loss of her position in the office if she becomes pregnant. She should be aware of what to expect before, during, and after maternity leave. Changes may take place in the office while on leave that could cause her to fall behind. Flexibility is vital in motherhood and the workforce. A child may become sick, needing the caring mother, at any given moment. Therefore, the employee needs time to meet the needs of the child, but she should also complete the expected tasks.
