Social networking is a relatively new phenomenon in the world of the web. Despite this, the success of social network companies like Facebook pioneering in this mode of communication is testament to its overwhelming popularity among all levels of society. The issue, though, is the effect social networking has on individuals. Some claim that social networking has caused a lot of problems. How far is this true? To explore the effects of social networking, it is necessary to understand what social networks are first. Social networks refer to specific websites or applications set up to allow users to share information online. Social networking is the activity of using them for communication. Supporters of social networking claim that it helps them search for lost friends as well as develop new connections. It is also said this helps socially awkward individuals to lead at least a semblance of a normal life, allowing communication with real people without actually having to face them. The information shared could range from simple statements to photos and even videos. Additionally, supporters of social networking claim other helpful functions as well. We can see the signs already. There are generally less real conversations between members of a group as they sit together in a gathering. Children do not talk to their parents as they sit at the dining table. Friends do not talk to friends as they sit beside each other at a park. Nowadays everyone seems to prefer looking at the screens of their gadgets instead of facing a real person, even when the person in question is sitting barely a metre away.
