However previously ECAs were considered to be as a distraction in studies, but now the role is changed and extracurricular activities are recognised as an important part of students college experience (Eide & Ronan, 2001). On the other hand Mary & Jessica (2011), participation of students in sports might have positive impact on future earning, though this varies according the ethnic background of the students. USF Athletics must make students want to come to sporting events. Then once they come, find a way so they stay and more importantly keep attending. The reasons students attend events are either because the teams are so successful, or because the students feel connected to the student athletes. Rather than isolating themselves the student athletes should interact with the entire university through classes, clubs, events, and fraternities. Student athletes and the Athletic Department should co-host events with student organizations and attend more university wide functions.
They teach life skills such as time management. Time management is important to have because it helps get work done more efficiently and is a way to manage your priorities. Priorities along with making commitments are also learned from participating in a extra activity. Students learn how to prioritize their work when in activities while also finding a balance of everything else going on in their life; commitment is also learned but showing that a student needs to be 100% involved to put in their best effort to whatever they choose to do and to be be successful doing it. “Various research studies have lined participation in student activities to higher math and english grades, improved grades and homework completion, better performance on math, reading and science test, and an increased likelihood of applying to college” (Annemarie Mannion).
The first reason that I believe supports my claim is that kids gain a sense of healthy competition that can prepare them for life. This can be seen in the article “Pros and Cons of Sports Competition at the High School Level” where Grace Chen, an education researcher, writer, and educator, states that sports and competition, “...help teens develop an array of personal skills, including resilience, attitude control, time management, and long term thinking abilities” (Chen 6). Achievement goal describes how athletes will participate for accomplishment purposes and to show-off their abilities. Self-determination talks about how young players’ confidence is linked to how they see their goals and motivation (Rottensteiner, Tolvanen, Laakso and Konttinen 1). The combination of these two theories explains that if a player is confident then they will perform well and do their best in the sport. Participation can fulfill the mental well-being of an adolescent athlete by the engagement and motivation of external factors such as peers and coaches (Rottensteiner, Tolvanen, Laakso and Konttinen 1). Youth sports can also accomplish the physical health of a young athlete.
Identifying services that predict student academic success and persistence among TRIO student is important for staff and higher education leaders at Johnston Community College. Jones and Watson (1990) noted that retention or persistence issues are critical to institutional planning and funding. Planning and funding have been greatly affected by the student retention rates. How Regular Physical Activity Affects GPA In University Students GPA is generally thought of as important, especially for entrance into certain faculties in university. Other groups that might find GPA important are student loan organisiations, academic boards (many universities require students maintain a particular GPA to remain an active student), and future employers. So then, it is in each university student’s best interest to maintain the highest level of GPA possible. There are many factors that are claimed to affect GPA in students, but none such as easy to manipulate for student as physical activity. From walking the dog to playing sports, there are seemingly an infinite number of possibilities for students to become more physically active.
