Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Steinbeck uses characterization to show the personality of each character which has a significant meaning in the books since each character represented a struggle at the time and then put a positive to it, for example if someone is lonely, Steinbeck wil have someone portect that character. Curley was the person in the book causing all the problems/issues that needed to be fixed. Curley was put into the story to represent the criticism of power and of American society, without Curley in the story, there would be no conflict and Lennie would have not been killed.

The novel will obviously have some conflict but nothing compared to the conflicts Curley brought to the story. The novel is built around Lennie and George on the ranch but Curley will always instigate them and cause problems between everyone. Without Curley, the book would be extremely boring and would most likely not be as popular as it is now. His jealously is a big part of the novel as well. Since he is a pretty small guy but has a bold personality, his jealousy causes many issues including not letting his wife talk to anyone, picking fights with people, and being aggressive toward others. Curley's wife knows her worth and she use to talk to other ranch workers but when they got married he did not let her talk to anyone, if she talked to anyone else he would get mad. Curley wanted to show the other men on the ranch how good he was at boxing so he wanted to fight Lennie but he caused Lennie to get scared and crush his hand which ended his boxing career. George killing Lennie at that time was to have him die with no pain or anger and to not have him killed by Curley and his men. Without Curley in this novel, this huge event and conflict in the story would not be necassary. Which would alter the book drastically causing whole different conflicts, situations, and ending. Curley caused all the conflicts in the book like when he is trying to boss around Lennie and try to fight him which led to his hand getting crushed by Lennie. If George were to kill Lennie without Curley in the book there would be no possible way to justify killing him. Curley gave George a reason to kill him and end problems with Lennie and
George had to shoot Lennie. If Curley had shot him first, he probably would have died a slow and painful death. The police might have found him, and put him either in prison, an asylum or had him executed. Even if he escaped those fates, he would still be a danger to those around him. None of these outcomes would have been better than the relatively painless death he died.
George had no way of knowing what would happen to Lennie. He made the decision to shoot Lennie because he assumed that Curley and his gang were going to torture
George killed Lennie for Lennie's better interest, he started with a mouse, then a puppy and then he killed Curley’s wife, who knows what he would have done next. He would have gone to prison either way, and if he had killed again then he would have either gone to prison or been killed by another person like Curley wanted to

Once Curley finds out about his wife's death he angerly promises the guys that he's going to kill Lennie, saying, "I'm gonna get him. I'm going for my shotgun. I'll kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself. I'll shoot 'im in the guts"(Steinbeck 96). If George wouldn't have stepped in, Curley was going to make sure Lennie died as painfully as possible for the death of his wife.
I believe that George made the right choice to Kill lennie himself. If he didn't kill him Lennie would get in more trouble, Curley and the others would torture him for killing Curley's wife, and he knew if he did make it out alive that there dream together wouldn't come true.
Curley’s hatred toward Lennie was led not only because Lennie killed his wife, but because Lennie humiliated him by breaking his hand. George also does the right thing by killing Lennie because he stopped him from causing more deaths or harming others

If george didn't kill Lennie, curley would murdered him in a brutally and nonhuman way. When Curly sees his wife dead in the barn his rage came spewing out like a volcano, and all he could think to do was murder Lennie. On pg 97 Curly says “when you see um, don't give him no chance. shut for his guts. ”this would be torture lennie because it would take more than one shot for Lennie to die and Lennie would have notest that he was getting murdered.
This quote tells us that Curley would kill Lennie and shoot him in the guts. It tells us that Curley wants him to suffer. George killing Lennie was the right choice
While petting Curley’s wife's hair he accidently killed her. George shot lennie so it would be less painful. George should not have killed lennie because they had plans for the future, and Lennie did not know any better as to what he was doing. Curley used this as an excuse to kill Lennie. He really wanted to kill Lennie because he destroyed his hand though. Curley said he was going to blow Lennie's guts out and make him suffer and be in pain. George prevented this by shooting Lennie in the back of the head and ending him quickly. Another reason is the ranchers would’ve killed him no matter what so this way George ensured it was fast and painless. On the other hand, this was condemned because George had been saying how his life would be so much better without Lennie and this allowed him to be able to live that life.
