In the film, “The Help” directed by Tate Taylor, an important relationship for me was that between Minny and Hilly. The two of them placed in the same room together created for some hilariously memorable scenes, including the scene where Minny gets fired and the iconic “eat my shit scene”.
The first scene I am going to introduce to you is the scene where Minny gets fired. There was a raging storm going outside and while Minny as like all other black maids in this era of history would commonly go outside in the separate bathroom reserved for blacks only should she ever feel the need to ‘relieve herself’. Going outside and getting saturated in the thunder and lightning was very clearly not high on her priority list that day and Tate Taylor 's

All throughout the movie leading up to this point any conversation between Minny and Aibileen where the topic of Hilly came up, so would the “terrible awful” she did to Hilly, this is an example of some great language features used throughout this movie as whenever they would discuss said “terrible awful”, there would always be a nervous edge in Minny’s tone, creating suspense for the viewers as we waited anxiously to hear what could be so bad that even Minny was scared. When the time comes for Minny to finally confess her sins to Aibileen and Skeeter, the scene opens to Minny narrating the event as it unfolds, standing on the porch outside Hilly’s house, we watch as Hilly stares down at her is disdain. “Sorry” Hilly’s scowl is interrupted as Minny is the first to speak, Hilly, a somewhat smug expression on her face is quick to turn on her heels and gesture at Minny, beckoning her to come inside. Cutting to Hilly 's dining hall, we watch as mouthful after mouthful Hilly engulfs two slices of Minny 's famous chocolate pie while a somewhat satisfactory smile rests upon Minnie 's face, conversation ensues with Hilly insulting and calling Minny derogative names until, clearly having had enough Minny states confidently "Eat my shit." The utter shock on Hilly’s face is delightful as she questions "Excuse me?", Minny now on a roll leans forward slightly and slowly baring her teeth repeats her previous statement …show more content…
Minny and Hilly’s on screen chemistry was a fantastic play on what happens when a classic 60’s “Southern Belle” white girl comes face to face with a walking hot fiery ball of snark and sass. In my opinion Minny and Hilly are the most underrated relationship in this whole movie, yet if they had more onscreen time together, the humorous conversations that occurred between the two would have taken away from the seriousness of the movie and as an audience member I feel that Tate Taylor blended the mix of racism and humour perfectly creating the “happy ending” that I as an audience member was hoping for, to see the villain vanquished and the hero prevail. This happy ending for Minny was a scene that built up enough suspense for the entire audience to be placed at the edge of their seats, watching in pent up anticipation, mouths open in shock as Minny’s sweet revenge clicked into play. I feel that not only did these two affect each other with their ongoing banter and snark between each other, but also their surrounding characters. Hilly and Minny’s relationship was the perfect representation of what every white girl didn’t want to have with their maid and the comparison between Hilly and Minny to everyone else was obvious, No relationship came close to the horribleness of theirs and this was a great positive influence on everyone else as they treated their maids much more fairly than Hilly did to
She was only a teenager that had so much more in life that could have been done in her future, if she did not make this one carless mistake. Not only was she out at an indecent hour, but also Taylor was under the influence of alcohol while driving. Since she was under the influence, there was no telling the speed in which she was driving. She could have been going 80 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour area. As well as it being dangerous to drink and drive, drinking and driving is also, a crime.
Jubilee is a book that tells the story of Elvira Dutton, who is more known to others as Vyry. Vyry lived her life starting from the antebellum years, which were the years prior to the Civil War and the time when slavery was thriving in America, throughout the Civil War years and to the Reconstruction period. Being a mulatto and a bastard of Master John, she spent most of her youth working as a slave in the Duttons’ plantation and living throughout three of the most important and famous periods in the history of America, she witnessed and even experienced a lot of changes in politic and economy as well as social that were happening in those periods. Events in part one took place during the antebellum years.
Wednesday Wars Respond to Literature Essay Have you ever read the book “The Wednesday Wars”, by Gary D. Schmidt? In “The Wednesday Wars”, the main character, Holling Hoodhood, seems to form opinions about people pretty quickly, especially Mrs.Baker, Holling’s new 7th teacher. This leads you to having the same opinion about certain characters in the book. However, you should never judge people based on first impressions. The world contains many people, you never do know who they really are and what they are capable of until you them.
Her arrogance is displayed early on when she threatens Skeeter’s position at the League after Skeeter questions her bathroom initiative, “I don’t think you ought to be joking around about the colored situation. Not if you want to stay on as editor of the League, Skeeter Phelan” (10). Hilly’s threat towards Skeeter demonstrates her desperation to remain in power and
(Pg 153) I disliked the fact that Theo dissed the girl just because his friend wouldn 't like it. " He wasn 't exactly looking for a girlfriend, and besides, April would be devastated if he began chasing a flirt like Hallie." (Pg 153) I also liked that the Boone 's were intelligent enough to dance around the illegal immigrant thing, save the trial, save Roberto, and give Julio 's family a home. " He explained that his parents were offering the deal of a lifetime.
That witch done turned me into the Smart Mouthed Criminal Maid a Hinds County!” (24). Enraged does not fully justify the emotions Minny is feeling. Her working as a maid was how she provided for her family, but now it looked as if she could never get a job again. Minny’s smart mouth was sure enough one way she could lose a job to the white women she worked for, but stealing was something she would have never done.
Hodgman had a knack for using humor in No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch. In such a repulsive essay she used humor to block out the nauseating unbearable parts of this Essay. Her misery was out pleasure. The descriptions were so revolting that I couldn’t help but laugh at the poor girls suffering. As Ann was about to devour the repelling meals she described in full detail the stomach- churning truth behind dog food.
Although a futile act it may seem, as she in the end cannot stop the cancerous ulcers she has from taking her life, her stubbornness about her death, allows her daughter, Skeeter, to have the courage to accept the job she was offered in New York City, along with a push from Aibileen and Minny. This is the second least important element, as although there are more things that have been kept or altered between the two forms, it wraps up Skeeter’s part in the book, putting it on the bottom of the list. The second least important element in this book to be kept or change is How Minny left Leroy. In both forms of “The Help”, Minny Jackson ends up leaving her husband, Leroy, with her kids, but why and how she leaves him changes with the media. In the book Minny tells the readers that while she is pregnant Leroy does not beat her
In The Help revenge is the fuel that escalates the segregation issue in Jackson and leads to Skeeter writing The Help. Even though many people sought revenge against Hilly, Hilly exacted her own revenge on Celia by ostracizing her from all of the other women in Jackson. Hilly still holds a grudge towards Celia for marrying Johnny while she still has feelings for him. She doesn't allow anyone in the town to be friends with Celia.
Once the dinner began, Amy got more and more embarrassed with her family as some of their actions are rude and gross to most cultures but not to theirs. “My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table, dipping them into the dozen or so plates of food”. Her father then reached across the table and poked into one of the fishes cheeks and said “Amy, your favorite”. This made Amy so embarrassed that she wished she would just disappear.
In the novel, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, there are many characters that can be identified as an antagonist throughout the story. However, Hilly Holbrook is the most significant of them all. With her attitude towards colored people, her controlling personality, and the methods she uses in order to have her way, it is obvious that Ms. Hilly is a definite villain of this novel. In the novel, many white families, including Ms. Hilly’s, had hired African American maids to help them around the house.
Furthermore, Minny becomes crucial to the writing of 'The Help'. It takes Minny to persuade the other maids to help Skeeter and Aibileen, for one, as her chapter in the book is critical to their safety. In the same way Aibileen overcame trepidation, Minny employs her courage to share her story with Skeeter. And Minny, though sceptical at first, comes to see the book as a positive change for the future. Selfless and courageous—Minny fights for what she believes in, even though she's well aware of the risks, and she protects and empowers her friends at the same
The profound novel, The Help, can be interpreted as having many themes and subliminal messages about life, but to truly understand the meaning of them, the conflicting points must be recognized. Due to the fact that the setting of the novel is during segregation, the friction between blacks and whites is what creates the novel. Although it is easily recognizable that one of the main conflicts is segregation, there is a major conflict between two prominent characters, Hilly and Skeeter, wealthy white women. Some of the issues within this novel lye in location and the social aspects of living in a small southern town in that time. There are several underlying conflicts in The Help, but the main one that sets up all the themes are the conflicts
I now understand that the power Mr. Neville has over the girls helped to make him think it was okay to control them and treat them inhumanely. This negative relationship showcased the main ideas of cultural identity and superiority of classes that Noyce was trying to convey. While the idas the bond between Molly and her mother help us to understand are not as critical they are still important to the story and teach us about the strength of family. I have learnt through studying these relationships and the ideas they demonstrate that when you are treated unfairly or discriminated against having someone you love can help you get through your struggles, even motivate you to do something about it and stand up for
