On this generation being ruled by modern technology it is seen that these technological devises can be very influential to teenagers. As a teenager I would like to know what effect spending more time on screen has on school performance. According to Kaizer Foundation Report teenagers in America spends the average of 6.5 hours on screen daily. This makes one wonder how do they cope with their school work, how do they get time to do their homework. According to American Journal of Epidemiology, besides being a waste of time spending more time on screen can cause one to be overweight and often get sick. Teenagers can learn about different cultures and be entertained even educational. According to Kyla Boyse television discourages and replaces reading time. Teenagers from families where lots of time is spent on television are not able to read properly. What is being watched on television can also frightens teenagers .It can change the way they view the world .Which will cause them to separate themselves from peers and end up missing school. The missing of school will lead to bad academically performance. Television viewing replaces activities that improve school performance such as getting enough sleep. (Kyla Boyse) The lack of enough sleep causes teenagers to be tired in class and therefore fail to concentrate on what is being taught. The author states that television’s effects on education are long-term .Therefore watching television as a child can influence educational level even at the age of 26.That was proved by a 15 years long study done by the University of Michigan researchers which discovered negative effects of television on teenagers. This relates to my question as it shows effects that television can have on teenagers’ school performance. Television has an impact on phonics and other language techniques. This was reported by David C, Diehl and Stephanie in their 2008 article for the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida. Teenagers can learn about different cultures on television and how to respect them. “Educational television should be absolutely forbidden. It can only lead to unreasonable disappointment when your child discovers that the letters of the alphabet do not leap up and dance around with royal-blue chickens.” by Fran Lebowitz, Metropolitan Life,1978. Fran disagrees with the fact that television improves language skills. Although some skills can be learnt from television, most it is not real and it creates confusion among teenagers. Heather L. Kerkorian believes that even those shows that are meant to be educational have negative effects on teenagers. However there is week evidence supporting Kerkorian’s statement. Kyla Boyse discovered the television and videos effect to be long-term. Watching television and videos in pre-school is related to school performance in High School.
