Logical reasoning is one of the significant differences from humans and animals. Being able to reason through a problem can help one solve numerous problems. Throughout the novel, The Glass Menagerie, Amanda especially uses logical reasoning to help come up with solutions. However, logical reasoning can cause one to exploit many small flaws thus missing out on advantous situation. Throughout The Glass Menagerie, restraint causes the characters to exploit small flaws and over think profitable situations. In the novel, the characters exploit small flaws in people and miss out on opportunities that could be profitable. One example would be when Amanda is asking Tom to find a gentleman caller for Laura. Amanda asks Tom to find a man that is “Doesn’t drink”.(Williams 36) Due to her specific expectations for the man, she narrows down many men that could have been a perfect fit for Laura. However, if Amanda was to just ask Jim to find a man that would fit well with Amanda she would be opening the possibilities for a perfect match. This not only shows that one should not focus on one’s flaws but also shows that over thinking a person or situation can lead to lower chances of success. The …show more content…
For instance, Laura overthinks the consequences of doing poorly on a test she takes in college and ruins her hopes of gaining a quality education. When Amanda is having a talk with Laura’s professor he explains that “ the first time we gave a speed test, she broke down completely.”(Williams 14) She not only has a nervous breakdown but Laura’s professor also explains that after the incident “she never showed up anymore.”(Williams 14) If Laura were to complete the test in the heat of the moment she would have not let her anxiety get to her and achieve much higher results. The situation validates that overthinking the situation at hand leads to ultimate
But others were in for a rude awakening once their classes started. Students such as Eva believed that she was ready to tackle any essays assigned, but soon the fear of failure arose. Eva grew fearful when the professor
“Conquering the Freshman Fear of Failure” an article written by David L Kirp is a piece that illustrates the link between fear and doing bad in school. David Kirp writes about the psychological result of giving students an environment where they will set themselves up for failure. He tries to promote the scientific study where it mentions that intellect and genetics have very little correlation. Kirp believes when you put students in a discouraging environment and plant failure in their minds, nothing can be achieved. He grabs his audience’s attention by channelling into their sympathy and bringing credibility to his argument.
Dana Nguyen Ms. Newray ERWC, Period 5 August 28, 2015 Perez’s & Graff Articles Summaries In Perez’s article, Want To Get Into College? Learn to Fail [ Feb. 12, 2012], failure is the most significant, but hurtful step towards a successful life. If a person has never honestly dealt with failure, how can they possibly ever improve or move forward? It is important to learn and be able to solve problems in society, whether it is for academic or not.
The theme in this novel is to be honest and be kind to others. Don't let things that people say hurt you and don't let people bring you down. Turner and Lizzie are good examples of being kind and nice. This novel is a great example of how people can be treated and how people shouldn’t be treated.
Melinda’s grades dropped drastically. She hid out around the school and wasn’t participating in class. Melinda tried to do an extra half assignment but because she didn’t talk she has to do more, to her it just isn’t worth it. Melinda’s mom expects her grades to increase but we doubt it would happen. The principal, Melinda, and Melinda’s parents had a meeting about Melinda not being apart of class.
Finally, it shows that people were not trust worthy during the 1920's. These are those values in detail. The person who shows the most greed in the novel is Daisy and her marriage to Tom. Daisy clearly throughout the story did not like Tom because he would always cheat on her with another woman.
An example of this can be found when Ellen wont eat with Starlettas family simply because they are black. But later on in the novel she realizes that racism is wrong. Life advice from the novel ‘A Separate Peace” would be don't let jealousy and envy overtake you, because it can lead to something you will regret in the long run. This example is found when Gene causes Finny to break his leg because he is jealous of Finnys athletic ability. But later on finds out that he ruined Finnys athletic days altogether and ends up regretting it in the long
This harms her academic performance. Ultimately, Melinda displays symptoms of low self-esteem, blame, and
It is evident that in the story that no main character has a legitimate and clear view of life. She offers examples about each of the four main characters and how their views on life, affected their overall fate. For example, she discussed how Pete did not take his affair with Maggie seriously, and how he ultimately hoped to have a relationship with Nell, but Nell does not see him in a positive way and thinks he is a fool. Pete was not viewing this part of his life clearly because he wants a relationship with a woman who does not want him while all the long he is involved with a woman who does. Maggie is another example.
Many detrimental situations that people come across or suffer from happen because of deficient judgement and awful decisions, including not thinking twice about their actions, that cause the situation to occur. For example, someone once tried to access a piece of toast out the toaster with a knife as a dare for money, without thinking about what might happen when putting that metal knife into the toaster trying to acquire the toast, then when he stuck the knife in the toaster, the toaster exploded immediately when the knife came in contact with the inside of the toaster, and as a result of the explosion, he was sent to the hospital, likewise
Tennesse Williams wrote the play The Glass Menagerie and Lorrain Hansberry wrote the play A Raisin in the Sun, which both similarly talks about families that are very much alike and different consecutively. Two characters really caught the attention of being different and similar in many aspects. These two characters are Laura Wingfield, from The Glass Menagerie, and Beneatha Younger, from A Raisin in the Sun. Laura and Beneatha both live in a fatherless household where their mother’s reign above the household and where their brothers are a primary source of income along with their mother’s income. Though I concede that both Laura and Beneatha are capable of working hard and achieving goals, I still insist that Beneatha has a brighter future
The important part is that she was able to imagine better, even though she herself had failed. She did not compromis, and neither should the student, however their lives may
Unfortunately, because of Tom being genuinely unaware of the fact that Jim just so happens to be engaged, Jim and Laura do not end up becoming a couple. As a result of this, tension arises between Amanda and Tom, causing Tom to leave the household. Finally, if Laura were not to be in the play, Tom would not feel guilt like he does in the end: “Oh, Laura, Laura, I tried to leave you behind me, but I am more faithful than I intended to be!” (Williams 97). Overall, both Tom and Amanda have a desire to help Laura, which develops the plot heavily due to their attempts to help her.
This is where failure comes in. Sherry proclaims that we need to recognize that this fear of failure is a positive teaching tool. To make this tool work, teachers and parents need to accept that if the student doesn’t learn the material, they must follow through with their promises of flunking. Both teachers and parents have to realize that the future of the child is at stake, and only good intentions come from the
The theme of carelessness represented by Myrtle Wilson, Tom Buchanan, and Daisy Buchanan is crucial for the development of the plot of this novel. Myrtle Wilson is a prime example of carelessness within the novel. She knows that Tom is a married man, and is very violent, yet, she continues to see him. Myrtle is focused on what
