Throughout the novel of the great gatsby there has been various affects that the past has contributed to the characters present from both a positive and a negative way. One character whos past contributed both positive and negative to him was james gatz also known for jay gatsby. In the begining of the novel we are informed that gatsby is a man who lives on the west of new york and hab been known for thorwing the biggest parties in town. There has been many encounters were gatsby tries to relive the past and also tells about his past. Some of gatsbys past has contributive to him in a positve way. Such as when he meet Dan Cody. This character help build up gatsby in a good way such as teaching him manners and others. This event was a negative impact on him because when he came back to look for his lover she was already married and gone and in the present he has lost the love of his life and was not able to have a family with her. Additionally, Gatsby indeed meet his lover in the present and short off had an affair with her but among that brought a lot of negativity to himself that even cost him his life for someone that even had the time to give a call before and after his death.When gatsby was on the bootlegging business might of also speculated more negatively towards him since people rumored that he had been in all types of illegal business that help him in his wealth. I think because I am older and now familiar with critically reading texts that I am able to understand and interpret the novel on a deeper, more intellectual level. Instead of labeling Gatsby as only a love story, I can now analyze and discuss the various themes and topics that the novel explores. I believe that this is one of the aspects that makes The Great Gatsby a classic, that when read at each stage of life, from adolescence to adulthood, the novel is able to take on a different meaning. As a high school teen, I understood the novel to be a romance, however, now I understand it in a completely different
