Loneliness
In the famous comic book TinTin, TinTin constantly feels alone. Loneliness is felt by everyone at some point in their lives. Some may feel alone more than others, even if they have someone to be with. Tintin has his faithful dog, Milou whom he loves yet is constantly a burden. George, a character in Of Mice and Men, deals with loneliness in a similar way as TinTin. The typical way of overcoming loneliness is lashing out and becoming hostile. George overcomes loneliness attaching himself to Lennie and keeping his eye on his dream.
Lennie, a special needs character, is George’s only friend. Lennie is massive and doesn’t know when he is hurting a living creature; this leads to a lot of accidents. A result of these accidents is the
Loneliness In the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, there are two men George Milton and Lennie Small who share the same dream of owning their own ranch someday. This novel was written during the Great Depression where many people would go out and find work. Represented by the characters George and Lennie the two men show the hardship of finding work. George and Lennie were two lucky men who had the companionship many others did not.
In the novel, Of Mice and Men, the author, John Steinbeck, placed the character, George Milton, with a predicament of killing his life-long best friend, Lennie Small. George knew he didn’t have another option other than to kill Lennie. He made his decision based on many different factors: George finally realized how much trouble Lennie caused him, he knew Curley would brutally kill Lennie, and George did not want to have the regret Candy had about not killing his dog himself. Lennie and George had the ideal brotherly love, which was very uncommon during this time-period.
Lennie Small is one of the main characters in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Don’t be fooled: Lennie Small is the total opposite of small. He is quite tall and is as times compared to have the strength of a bear however, his actions are compared to be similar to the innocence of a dog or a child. Although Lennie is mentally handicapped he has a really good friend. So, why is George such a loyal friend to Lennie?
There are more instances too of loneliness in Of Mice and
While reading this book a few things were noticed like the number of characters who were experiencing loneliness. Although none of the characters really know each other they still have one thing in common and that’s their need of companionship. In my essay I’ll be explaining how each one needs a companion. The characters Lennie, Curley’s wife, and Crooks all exemplify loneliness and isolation.
In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, he illustrates loneliness and isolation within his character’s actions and feelings. In the novel, there were several characters who went through the loneliness of ranch life in the United States; a handless old man named Candy, a black crippled man named Crooks, and Curley’s wife. Candy faces loneliness and isolation after losing his dog, Crooks was forced to live away from the other workers because he was black, and Curley’s wife was the only female on the ranch, receiving no attention from anyone. Loneliness and isolation are expressed numerous times throughout the novel, especially through the emotions of Candy and his old dog. Steinbeck conveys loneliness and isolation through the emotions of
”(13) This quote proves the thesis true by saying that George needs Lennie in order to defeat Loneliness. George says that even though they are a symbol of companionship they are also a symbol of loneliness because even though they are companions that does not automatically make them not lonely. Together they make a unique companionship where they can rely on each other to battle loneliness. Later in the book George and Lennie are still companions during this rough time in history.
John Steinbeck once said, “A journey is like a marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you can control it.” (Brainy Quote). This lack of control can be seen in Of Mice and Men, which was written during the naturalistic period.
In Of Mice and Men, loneliness is a prominent theme that reveals itself in many instances throughout the book. It seems that nearly all the characters possess it in some way, shape, or form, but they do not all show it in the same manner. Being lonely can cause tragedies to occur similar to the death of Curley’s wife, or it can create a cloud over someone, causing his or her ultimate end. A couple of characters that seclusion is very noticeable in are Curley’s wife and Crooks. They go about life being secluded, but they show it in different ways.
People need people. Being lonely can make society go insane… especially unexpected people. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, two unlikely paired men named George is an undersized, dark man with “sharp, strong features”; he’s quick to face when it comes to his friend Lennie. Lennie, his companion is his opposite, a sweet, dous size man with a “shapeless” face that has a mind of a child. They share a dream of buying their own piece of land, farming it, and mostly to Lennie, keeping the rabbits... but traumatic events gets in their way to make it tough for them to accomplish it.
In Of Mice of Men, a novel written by John Steinback, George's decision to end Lennie's life was a difficult one, but ultimately the right one. Lennie, due to his mental disability, had a tendency to get into trouble and cause harm to himself and those around him. George, as Lennie's caretaker, was the only one who could take the necessary steps to protect Lennie from himself. George didn’t want Lennie to suffer a long painful death from being shot in the guts, or from being locked up in a cage being beaten by Curley and the farmhands, or perhaps suffer from loneliness from working on a ranch: “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family.
Title Goes Here George is overall a really good friend to Lennie. George may have his moments throughout the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck but his protectiveness towards Lennie, and loyalty show he truly is a good friend. George shows how protective he is for Lennie by constantly talking about him being an amazing farm hand (Steinbeck 22).
People Affected by Loneliness Loneliness can make anyone affected by it very depressing and sad to see. It is seen in Of Mice and Men in many characters that are prominent in the story. The main ones are Crooks (the black stable hand), Candy (the old worker with his old dog), and Curley’s wife (who is ignored so that they do not get into trouble). Each of these characters have had lasting events that led them here.
In Mice of Men, George is a protagonist of the story. He takes care of Lennie because is mentally challenged, and in his mind, Lennie is a child, but he is an adult. He helps Lennie whenever he goes, because Lennie couldn’t control his strength when he touch soft things. When he touch soft things, he could kill things that are soft like animals with soft fur.
First, loneliness is the sadness caused by having no friends or company, and friendship is a state of mutual trust and support between people, they are polar opposites, yet a person may acclaim to have both. For example today a person may have a friend, or many, but still will face loneliness in their life in one way or another. This is shown in Of Mice and Men periodically throughout the novel, knowing this the reader is challenged with such themes, the enticing beauty of friendship between George and Lennie, and the gloomy dreaded idea of loneliness shown by Curley’s wife, Candy, Crooks, and again Lennie. Among these characters the reader may also feel a connection between themselves and the characters, even though the world now and during the publication of Of Mice and Men has changed a lot. The world has reformed, and developed exponentially so, however friendship and loneliness is still a facet of everyday
