The Romans found it important for people to focus on the good of the entire empire. One issue they sought to fix were monarchs with too much strength. This sentiment began around 500 BC. A part of this belief in the central government was a distaste for monarchy. It was ostensibly believed that a roman king raping a woman is reason for the political shift from monarchy to a republic. For one reason or another there was fracture between roman kings and the senate which assisted them. During eras of great expansion, the republic ruled. To avoid any individual having the ability to reestablish a monarchy system, power was split between, less powerful monarchs, aristocrats and the people. In fact, one of the factors that led to the fracture of Rome towards their decline was in fighting and disagreements. The Roman Empire was split into 2 separate places in order to stabilize the empire. Many different religions and city allegiances combined within the empire. In Source A, Citizenship in the Roman Republic by USHistory.org, the text clearly states: “All males over the age of 15 who were descended from the original tribes of Rome became citizens.” This text proves the Roman laws of citizenship were not only non-democratic, but also ageist, sexist, racist, xenophobic, and bigoted. The law states that if you don't meet all the criteria for citizenship, you can't possibly be a citizen. In essence, this meant that you had no rights at all or little rights at all. This citizenship law does not ensure that all citizens have any rights or authority, which is a crucial element of what democratic citizenship entails.

The creation of the Senate allowed for the government to be run by elected officials, who could represent the interests of the citizens and make decisions that were in the best interest of the empire. Additionally, the use of law and order maintained stability and allowed for the empire to flourish. The Roman legal system was renowned for its fairness and efficiency, which helped to promote a sense of justice and stability throughout the

The Republic's checks and balances system, which was created to prevent any one person or institution from obtaining too much power, was another element that made it democratic. The Roman Republic was primarily made up of the Senate and the Assembly, each of which had its own distinct set of responsibilities and powers. The Roman Republic had a number of features that, despite their apparent democracy, made them less democratic than they could have appeared. The influence of affluent and powerful people, for instance, frequently weakened the system of checks and balances.

This was a huge change from having many people in charge like they did in the republic. Also, citizens weren’t heard as much as they were in the republic. They couldn’t elect who they thought was going to make the best decisions for them; instead they had to obey whatever the dictator said even if they didn’t like his views. Because Rome had conquered so much, its territories were huge. Dictators had to rule all the land by themselves and had to make sure that no one was going to try and rise against them.
