Influences on Missy’s life
The experiences that have influenced Missy's life include the social structure of Pittman County, high school and her homelife. Her homelife has influenced her when her mom wanted to prepare her before she left. An example of this in the novel is when her mom is trying to teach her about her car and some of the things that can happen when on the road. “What do you do if i let the air out of the front tire?” (Kingsolver,14). This quote is talking about how Missy's mom is trying to help her know how to work with her tire and change it for a new one being that Missy has a fear of exploding tires and tires in general it was something she needed to know. This is seen when in the novel Missy is talking about how she wanted to finish all of her high school on-like some girls that were “dropping by the wayside like seeds off a poppyseed bun” she says “i was not the smartest or even particularly outstanding but i was there and staying out of trouble and i intended to finish” (Kingsolver 3). This quote is stating that she really wanted to stay in highschool finish without getting pregnant and having to drop out. Missy life was also influenced when her teacher thought of her when he had a job opening this is seen through this quote “But this was a real job at Pittman County Hospital, which was one of the most important and cleanest places for about a hundred miles”(Kingsolver 5). She goes on to talk about the job and how the teacher got notice about the job and why she didn't feel he would have choose her.
