ESSAY Cherilynn tilley Atticus Finch from the novel to kill a mockingbird is great father and role model to his two children Gem and Scout by setting a good example for them by being courageous, intelligent and a fair man. Atticus is very courageous all throughout the book. For example, when, he shoots the mad dog. Or when he represents a Tom Robinson; a black man in court when in Maycomb, the town he lives in is very racist towards black people at the time. He knew before he decided to represent Tom, that he would be ridiculed, menaced and maybe even put in danger but he did it anyways and to me that really shows courage. Another example of when Atticus showed great courage is when the lynch mob came looking for tom and he opened the door and a man from the lynch mob said “you know what we want. Atticus was a very well-educated man, probably one of the smartest people in Maycomb. He proves his intelligence during the trial when he is able to distinguish that tom could not have possibly given Mayella; the woman who accused him of rape, her injuries due to the fact that he has no use of the hand he would have needed to do that to her. Many people in the town of Maycomb were poorly educated and some were even illiterate but Atticus would read to scout every night and he even taught her how to read. When Scout is having trouble understanding why her teacher is mad that she is able to read Atticus gives her some good insight when he says “never really understand a person until you consider their point of view - until climb into his skin and walk around in it”. That shows me that Atticus is a very intelligent man and to me it is very important to set that example for your
