A parent's role in their child’s life can affect their morals and values as they grow up. In Harpers Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is a single father who is trying his best to be a good parent and role model to his children, Scout and Jem Finch. By teaching them that racism is not okay and that everyone should be treated with respect no matter their age, race, or beliefs. Atticus, a lawyer, was given a trial where he has to defend a black man against a rape charge against a white woman. The crime was allegedly committed in his community which was typically racist during the 1930s. Atticus however, strongly believes in treating everyone equally and treats Caluprnia, the family maid, cook, and nanny, like family. Atticus having this mentality has rubbed off onto his children, so when Scout and Jem went to Calpurnia’s church they felt comfortable there even though they were the only white people there. In the novel, Atticus, the father of Scout and Jem Finch, is chosen to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape by a young white woman named Mayella Ewell. Most of Atticus’s friends and neighbors believe Atticus should just go through the motions and let Tom be wrongfully convicted, as they live in the horribly racist town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s.
By being strong in his belief of what's right, Atticus is a true role model. When Scout and Jem are lost Atticus is there to give them advice and take care of them. “His hands were under my chin, pulling up the cover, tucking it around me” (Lee 281). Atticus is a loving father that wants to take care of his children. “Depends on how you look at it, what was one negro, more or less among two hundred of ‘em” (Lee 235).

The 1930's was one of the most despicable times in American history, and as a father in this era you could do one of two things: Allow your children to fall into the stereotypes accepted by society, or teach them to think for themselves. Atticus Finch, the father of Jem and Scout in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, has chosen to raise his children by the former, and the benefits of this can be seen in the character of his kids. Atticus raises his children in the most judgmental time of American history by leading with his actions and teaching his children proper moral lessons about the world and people. Atticus, in this time period, had to do the right thing while the rest of the world was doing the wrong thing.
Atticus took on the case of Tom Robinson a black man accused of raping a white woman. At this time period in history there was a lot of racial tensions and discrimination especially in the majority racists town of Maycomb. Plenty of people didn’t like the fact that Atticus was defending Tom Robinson so in Chapter 11 when Scout wonders why he is he responds with “This case, Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to the essence of a man’s conscience-Scout, I couldn’t go to church and worship God if i didn’t try to help that man.” (139). Scout is able to recognize the prejudice in her town and also be able to not follow their ways.

He is a great father who lived in a house in Maycomb county, Alabama during the great depression. In 2015, another version of Atticus was revealed in Harper Lee’s novel Go Set a Watchman. In this book, Jean Louise finds Atticus at the KKK which is an American hate group.

His parenting style and his personality have impacted his children in many good ways. He is a single father with two kids, Scout and Jem, and he has influenced how they behave by the way he acts. Scout and Jem are very innocent and do not understand racism very well. Atticus has an unusual relationship with his kids. He cares very much for them and their moral upbringings, but he treats them like adults and is a very hands-off parent. Atticus has a black maid, Calpurnia who he considers family that helps take care of Scout and Jem. Despite the absence of their mother, Scout and Jem were raised to regard woman as equal, which is why Calpurnia is like a mother to them.
