A parent's role in their child’s life can affect their morals and values as they grow up. In Harpers Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is a single father who is trying his best to be a good parent and role model to his children, Scout and Jem Finch. By teaching them that racism is not okay and that everyone should be treated with respect no matter their age, race, or beliefs. Atticus, a lawyer, was given a trial where he has to defend a black man against a rape charge against a white woman. The crime was allegedly committed in his community which was typically racist during the 1930s. Atticus however, strongly believes in treating everyone equally and treats Caluprnia, the family maid, cook, and nanny, like family. Atticus having this mentality has rubbed off onto his children, so when Scout and Jem went to Calpurnia’s church they felt comfortable there even though they were the only white people there. Atticus has a positive role in his children's life because he knows what he says had an impact on their life. Atticus is a good parent because he understands that he is a role model to Jem and Scout. Scout was complaining about everything that went wrong in her class. When she brought up an incident with a poor kid in her class she started to talk trash, but that’s when Atticus said, “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 33).
