Jorge Perez John Alvarez American Literature 27/3/23 Death of an Innocent Essay “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” - Helen Keller. Like the quote, Chris’s life was all about a daring adventure. He never wanted to do things the easy way, making things hard for himself, giving up his previous lifestyle to achive his personal goals. His parents wanted him to go to law school, however Chris wanted to create his own path. He wanted to be independent, going on dangerous adventures in order to prove himself. Chris McCandless was careless and idiotic because his arrogance led him to not prioritize his own safety which lead to his downfall. He displayed carelessness by neglecting and disregarding his family. Chris was idiotic because he was unprepared, leaving essential items behind, and he never accounted for his own safety .Chris was arrogant, purposely leaving behind essential supplies he would …show more content…
Besides now having essentials to make it though his journey, he buried and burned his possessions for the thrill of it. “$20,000 in this account- he donated the entire sum to the Oxford Famine Relief Fund.” (Page 5). “McCandless was exhilarated, so much so that he decided to bury most of his worldly possessions- burned his last remaining cash.” (Page 5). “He needed money to buy some new gear… I even pfferd to buy him a plane ticket to Fairbanks” (Page 6). This evidence shows Chris arrogance, because he was donating all his money (over 20k), giving away, then later on burning and burying his essentials he could have used throughout his journey because he didn't think he needed it, leading to his downfall. This reveals thoughout his journey, Chris was given opportunities to receive help and use his tools and money to his advantage, but he refuesed because of his independent nature and arrogance, not thinking he would need these vital supplies, and help from
He was not only careless with the feelings of others, but also with his well being. He didn’t seem to know what would be awaiting him in the wild because he didn’t bring many supplies or do too much to prepare, which is what set him apart from a typical adventurer. Chris McCandless was an ignorant narcissist, which was made clear through his recklessness. Chris’s narcissism was shown through his inconsideration for how others around him were
He not only worried about the material things he was going to use to survive like his rifle and rice. But also educated himself with books. Chris was using logic, for example is there was no game in Alaska what was going to be his plan B? He would have no other choice but to eat plants, Berries, fruits? Chris needed to know what was edible so he wouldn't just go out to eat everything and commit suicide.
With all the information gathered, I believe that Chris made a mistake of going out into the Alaskan wilderness because he lacked supplies, didn't have enough knowledge of our natural survival, and he didn't have a map. One of the largest reasons Chris’s adventure turned fatal was because he lacked supplies like food. Hence
I think that Chris had a reason to go to Alaska even if it was only a thing that he wanted to do. The final thing that makes me disagree with Callerman’s argument is that he says that McCandless is crazy and I disagree because he was not crazy at all but I do agree because when he was stuck in the wild he was getting crazy because he was alone and he noticed that he couldn’t leave. These are the reasons why I disagree with Callerman’s argument that McCandless is arrogant, and that he had no reason to go to Alaska, and that Chris McCandless is
I believe one of the hardest and bravest things he encountered was being able to get rid of all of his personal files and burn some of his money. Then the rest he would donate it to charity that was a good decision he made. (Chapter 3)” [McCandless] Intended to invent an utterly new life for himself, one in which he would be free to wallow in unfiltered experience. To symbolize the complete severance from his previous life, he even adopted a new name .
Although I understand why he did what he did, I still think, objectively, that he did a selfish thing. We find out Chris dies pretty early on in the book. Only after we know that he dies, do we learn more of his backstory. He was intelligent and his family was fairly wealthy.
In the book Into the Wild the author states “No longer to be poisoned by civilization” this quote proves McCandless was free in the wild and he felt good not having to worry about others. Nonetheless, Even though McCandless felt free he was still selfish. He still left being family and friends and could have cared less. Thus Chris was selfish leaving his family and friends, no matter if he felt free or not he still left behind people who cared about
He gave away his possessions, including his savings, and set out on a journey that would ultimately lead to his death. There are several reasons why McCandless can be seen as a fool. First, he was unprepared for the harsh Alaskan wilderness. He lacked proper gear, supplies, and training. He didn't bring a map or a compass, and he didn't have any experience living off the land.
The second reason, Chris was reckless because he wanted by himself to leave the house. Doesn’t care about his family. Doesn’t tell anyone and leaves home secretly, he won't tell his family. In the text it says, “It was the masterful and incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. ”(9).
The last thing he could have done was he could have told one of his family members or one of his friends or even just a stranger or local person that was in the area that he was going to be out there for some time and when he doesn't show up they should go up to where he was and check up on chris and see how he was doing or he could have brought a phone with him and he should have called his sister at least to call he and tell her how he was doing so nothing bad happens to him but he didn't do that instead he just went in there all by himself with no help and they could have also given him some food and water and some clothes to stay warm during the winter if he did have the essentials i think he would have survived longer and would have more time to explore the wild. My conclusion of the Chris McCandless is that if you wanna be free and live out in the wild you should at least tell someone in your family or one of your friends and tell them where
Chris only had a backpack with a few books, basic clothes, personal care items, and some other camping supplies. He also had a .22 caliber rifle with 400 rounds of ammunition. Chris 's intention was to live off the land as much as possible. He even Gallien, who was the person who gave him a ride to the Stampede trail a few things "Alex insisted on giving Gallien his watch, his comb, and what he said was all his money: eighty-five cents in loose change." (Krakauer 6)
He wanted to go in there without really anything so that he can make things that were in the nature. “Chris didn’t think twice about risking his own life…”(Carine McCandless 128). I absolutely think that this quote about Chris is very true because he was so into finding new adventures to take, to enjoy and be happy with
Chris McCandless: A Reckless Idiot Chris McCandless was a reckless idiot and there is no denying that basic truth. Chris McCandless was a man born into a middle class family. Chris had parents that loved him, a roof over his head, and food to eat. Despite all those riches he had, he threw them away. Chris was a very selfish man.
I think he just wanted to pursue life in a different way. Chris was not seeing life the way anyone else was, so he decided to brush off into the wild and be free on his own. Though he did not survive, he was still a very bright, arrogant human being. Shaun Callarman states, “He had no common sense, and he had no business going into Alaska with his Romantic silliness.” Chris knew going into the wild that he did not have much survival skills, but that did not stop him from doing what he wanted to do because he did not care about society and was just completely over everything which was why he made the move to the wilderness.
He made a lot of mistakes based on arrogance. I don’t admire him at all for his courage nor his noble ideas. Really, I think he was just plain crazy,” shows that Shaun believes Chris had no common sense in his doing for leaving society for the wild. I agree with Callarman’s position of thinking “ he had no common sense” and that he was “bright and Ignorant” because Chris thinks he did not have much to offer in his society, ditched all his possessions to take a trip into the Alaskan Wilderness and did not have much common sense or survival skills. Chris McCandless was very courageous for ditching all his possessions to take a trip in the wilderness.
