Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass had once said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” (4) Frederick was a man of many talents. He was an amazing public speaker and very intelligent. He was born into slavery and escaped and became a famous African American. He was influential on many different things such as human rights and legislation that helped his people. He understood the need for everyone to be equal and that race or gender didn't matter. The determination that Frederick showed while learning and never giving up on it, as well as being courageous in fighting for African American and women's rights led him to do things most African Americans couldn't do. Auld is what started Frederick determination of learning as he got older (3). Soon Mr. Auld found out about him learning and stopped it because he was afraid. So the lessons with Mrs. Auld stopped and Frederick had to learn else where with the white children as well as some of the blacks (3). While being moved from the Aulds he tried to teach the other slaves as an effort to make them more educated of what was going on (3). After that a 16 year old Douglass was moved to another slave owner by the name of Edward Covey (Biography.com Editors). Covey was known as a “slaver breaker”” because he would whip and slash the slaves (3). It was said by Frederick himself, that the first time it had happened Covey demanded he take off his clothes and when Frederick wouldn't he got angry and slashed at him with a knife in the middle of the woods (6).Although Covey tried to make him break Frederick never did because he was stronger than that. He had a certain point of breaking down at least psychologically but instead of breaking down he fought back (Biography.com Editors). It seemed as though he used all of his anger against Covey and physically used it against him. He used this to make his determination better to finally escape from what was keeping him bound (3). After this he started to come up with a plan to escape but was soon figured out and sent to prison (3). After getting out of prison he found another way to escape with a partner named Anna Murray and that is how he finally got free
