Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass had once said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” (4) Frederick was a man of many talents. He was an amazing public speaker and very intelligent. He was born into slavery and escaped and became a famous African American. He was influential on many different things such as human rights and legislation that helped his people. He understood the need for everyone to be equal and that race or gender didn't matter. The determination that Frederick showed while learning and never giving up on it, as well as being courageous in fighting for African American and women's rights led him to do things most African Americans couldn't do. Auld is what started Frederick determination of learning as he got older (3). Soon Mr. Auld found out about him learning and stopped it because he was afraid. So the lessons with Mrs. Auld stopped and Frederick had to learn else where with the white children as well as some of the blacks (3). While being moved from the Aulds he tried to teach the other slaves as an effort to make them more educated of what was going on (3). After that a 16 year old Douglass was moved to another slave owner by the name of Edward Covey (Biography.com Editors). Covey was known as a “slaver breaker”” because he would whip and slash the slaves (3). It was said by Frederick himself, that the first time it had happened Covey demanded he take off his clothes and when Frederick wouldn't he got angry and slashed at him with a knife in the middle of the woods (6).Although Covey tried to make him break Frederick never did because he was stronger than that. He had a certain point of breaking down at least psychologically but instead of breaking down he fought back (Biography.com Editors). It seemed as though he used all of his anger against Covey and physically used it against him. He used this to make his determination better to finally escape from what was keeping him bound (3). After this he started to come up with a plan to escape but was soon figured out and sent to prison (3). After getting out of prison he found another way to escape with a partner named Anna Murray and that is how he finally got free

Mrs. Auld was a mother figure to Douglass who helped him gain a passion for education. Unfortunately, Once Sophia’s husband discovered that she was giving Douglass private lessons, he ordered her to stop. He believed that teaching a slave how to read and write was wrong. Because Douglass knew that Mr. Auld was trying to mentally chain him, he began to value education more. Learning about the world outside of slavery was essential in gaining freedom, which is why Douglass never stopped reading.

Frederick Douglass was a renowned abolitionist, intellectual, and orator. Born into slavery as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, he would eventually successfully escape from slavery on September 3, 1838 and go on to live a very successful life. His life would include three autobiographies, various speeches and literary works, and he would be known as one of the driving forces for the prosperity of the black population in the United States. Douglass would spend many years (his very last years included) in the heart of the United States, Washington D.C. Washington D.C. was the home of numerous successful and well-known African Americans.
When Frederick was 15 year old, Thomas Auld took Douglass back from Hugh after an argument they had. Thomas Auld sent Douglass to work for a poor farmer who had a reputation as a "slave-breaker." His name was Edward Covey and on his plantation he whipped his slaves regularly. Frederick decided to fight against Coveys harsh beatings.
As a slave, he determined that his intense desire in his life was getting education and found a way for hisfreedom. When Frederick was eight, he was sent to Baltimore as a houseboy for Hugh Auld, Captain 's son-in-law 's brother. Sophia, Auld 's wife, taught Frederick to read, but Auld, who believed that education would ruin slaves, made them unhappy and run away; so that Sophia turned to cruelty and became an evil with inhuman as the slavery being. From that point on, Frederick was grateful Hugh Auld and his wife who unwittingly gave Douglass the key to escape slavery because he realized that education and knowledge would be enlightenment and the path to freedomfor himself and his colored people later. He continued teaching himself to read and tried to grow up his knowledge by learning from the local boys in exchanging for reading lessons, the ships’ carpenters, and theMethodist hymn books.
The Narrative of Fredrick Douglass displays the hardships of many African American experienced first-hand, and also his journey toward freedom and enlightenment. Fredrick Douglass is one of the most famous abolitionists the United States has ever seen. The events that led up to his freedom of slavery were very interesting. In his Narrative you not only get to see the worst of slavery, but you can also feel firsthand what Douglass went through to get his freedom. As we all know slavery was something you could not just walk out of. Some slaves that try to escape even end up getting punished or killed.

While he was there on a Maryland plantation Douglass said that the best thing that happen "was my learning to read and write, under somewhat disadvantages"(521).
