In 2009, NBC released a political comedy called: Parks and Rec. The Emmy-nominated American sitcom takes place in the fictional town of Pawnee. The show tells the story of Leslie Knope, a bureaucrat in the Parks and Recreation department, becoming the first female governor of Indiana. Parks and Rec examines the complexity within bureaucracies using the characters selected to work in the department. All the employees are good, well-meaning people. However, the main commentary comes from Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson. Through these two characters, the show presents the struggle between traditional liberalism and classic libertarianism and how that struggle plays out in modern government. Although Leslie and Ron are main sources of commentary, …show more content…
Leslie Knope’s views of government present the ideals of a traditional liberal. She believes that government needs to be involved in people’s lives as much as possible. Equality and equal opportunity are just a few of the many things Leslie believes government should facilitate. Ultimately, it is the government’s job to improve the lives of the populace. The driving factor for Leslie is to know that she made Pawnee a better place for the citizens. Her motivation to make Pawnee a better place comes from her high opinions of all her favorite people in government. She aspires to be like her idols and to do so acts the way she thinks they would. When Leslie sets her mind to something, she does not stop until it is accomplished. The Pawnee Commons is a good example. At the beginning of the show the Pawnee Commons was a massive pit that Leslie wanted to turn into an angelic park. However, stalled by bureaucratic red tape and backstabbing attempts from people such as Jeremy Jamm, Leslie did not break ground on the Pawnee Commons until season six. Once she broke ground, there was no stopping her and she finished …show more content…
Every character has their own personal reason for joining government work. Ron illustrates the do-nothing bureaucrat. He allows Leslie to do his work for him because of his views on government. The only reason Ron works in government is “to shut things down and bleed the rotting beast from the inside.” Leslie, on the other hand, joins the government because she genuinely likes the work and appreciates all the changes that she can make for the citizens of Pawnee. At first, she is a small name, but she has a big ego. Her ego, to be like her heroes from childhood, drives her to accomplish her dream. However, to get there she must become the best civil servant she can be, and she is up to the task. Then we have Tom Haverford. Born Darwish Sabir Ismael Gani, Tom changed his name because he thought “brown people with funny-sounding Muslim names didn’t have a chance in politics.” Tom represents the cool guy in the office who only cares about himself. Throughout the show, Tom is always seen looking sharp. He is also put in charge of multiple events and instead of doing what he is supposed to do, he turns it into a promotion session for himself and his endeavors. One example of this occurs when Tom is asked by Leslie to coordinate a meet and greet so she can promote herself to local business owners. Consequently, Leslie finds out that Tom has turned her event into a promotion event for his

In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, the citizens of a corrupt United States are controlled by the government. Books and novels have been prohibited because they contain ideas and knowledge which allow the citizens to think. The government does not approve of thinking so the books and novels get burned by firemen. Instead of reading novels, the people can only watch television and read comics and sex magazines.
Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980. He had disenchantment with government and politics in his past. Not only was he in depth and acknowledged with the operation of politics, but was as well in depth with the intricacies of entertainment. His presidential election contained a transformation that was at the least of most American’s expectations, with his past of show business. His beginning to presidency was the point of a convergence, which that involved his acting career, and then becoming a dominant figure in politics, and in the nation.

Since the Declaration of Independence ratified over two centuries ago, the United States of America have become a dominant, strong government. It has come from a vast, resource full land with only Native Americans to a vast, resource full land with every race. Americans seem invisible after all the success that the country has created that people might think that they are invisible, but if something happened inside America with the government, the whole country would go into chaos. If the government tried to recreate the government in The Hunger Games, the population would try to fight back but inevitably fall.
Stella’s sister, Blanche, sees through the illusion and can see how toxic the marriage really is. Stanley and Blanche come from distinctly different backgrounds, Stanley is from the working class while Blanche comes from wealth. Williams uses these two contrasting points of views on marriage, to show the issues of possessiveness, class, and sexism. When it comes to Stanley’s marriage to Stella, one of the most notable characteristics is how possessive Stanley is. An example of this is when Stanley found out that Blanche and therefore Stella, lost their estate.
Not all tricksters are the same, there is always one thing that will set them apart. Mark Twain and Gary Soto wrote great stories and both have a manipulative main character, Tom Sawyer, and Arnie Sanchez. Both authors portrayed their characters with a trickster affect. Tom Sawyer in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and Arnie Sanchez in Born Worker by Gary Soto have similar work ethics, but they differ in what they value. Values.
One piece of evidence that demonstrates McCandless’ attitude toward the government was that McCandless does not really care for the government rules. Reason so is that when his car battery died rather than going to the rangers to ask for help he did not, reason so is because he did not want to be asked questions. “If he went to the rangers… they would have some irksome questions for him: Why had he ignored posted regulations and driven down the wash in the first place? Was he aware that the vehicles registration had expired two years before and had not been renewed? Did he know that his driver’s license had also expired, and the vehicle was uninsured as well?”

Chapter 1: 2. When Nick first enters the Buchanan's house, the scene is not presented realistically. It is said that, "...the two young women ballooned slowly to the floor" (12). The women are painted as objects or even furniture in the room. This makes it seem as though Tom Buchanan is indeed the man of the household, and a strong one at that.
Appearance VS. Reality In the novel To Kill a MockingBird written by Harper Lee there are many events that occur that show the theme of appearance vs Reality. Throughout the story Boo radley is looked at as a monster that hides in his house and scares children. Mrs.Dubose is an old lady who had a morphine addiction and Tom robinson is known for sexualy abuseing a young white woman.
This is made clear through Stanley’s insecurities about inferiority to women and his prolonged struggle to defeat Blanche. Again, this is evident with Blanche and even Stella. Stella is perceived as a static character with no real individuality, and Blanche, who is seemingly more independent, is characterized mostly by her sexuality. Tennessee Williams demonstrates society’s need for the superiority of men to women through the interactions of Stanley and Blanche in the play, their struggles, and their ultimate
Undoubtedly politics is “the study of influence and the influential”, there is most certainly truth in Harold D.Lasswell’s definition of politics. Throughout the course of this essay the study of politics will be examined in relation to Laswell’s definition. Furthermore the concept of government and how people influence government action will be looked at. In Lasswell’s book “Politics, Who Gets What, When and How” he clearly outlines the “influential are those who get the most of what there is to get”, in his opinion politics was primarily to do with power and influence. Lasswell’s definition of politics has been in the past supported by prominent political scientists such as Abraham Kaplan and Robert A. Dahl, both men believe the study of politics is largely to do with the use of influence by those who find themselves in influential positions.
