Animal Farm was full of corruption from the beginning. It started with Mr. Jones, and continued all the way through the leadership of Napoleon. Both Jones and Napoleon used their corrupted power to manipulate and exploit the animals on the farm. There are many different ways that Animal Farm was corrupted and many different ways they had corrupted it. Some things involved in the downfall of the farm included ignorance, manipulation, and power-hoarding behaviors. The first factor on the corruption of Animal Farm that took place is ignorance. Ignorance is described as the lack of knowledge or information. The word ignorance is a perfect way to describe Napoleon. Manipulation could be described a little differently to everyone, but the definition that fits best in the situation of Animal Farm is, to control or influence (a person or situation) cleverly, unfairly, or unscrupulously. The pigs, specifically Napoleon, took every opportunity to manipulate every animal on the farm to believe what he was doing was okay and correct. It could be argued that Napoleonwas even manipulating Squealer to follow him and be his little servant. Napoleon will always use propaganda and lies to get his ways. For example, “It is for YOUR sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples” (Orwell 42). The pigs stealing the apples for them to eat was twisted into a lie that they needed them to perform their best to be able to lead the other animals, so it is for the other animals they eat the apples. The last quote that shows how manipulated all the animals are is, “I will work harder” (Orwell 37). Even the strongest of the animals, Boxer, was even manipulated into thinking he has to work as hard as he possibly can just to please the pigs and make it on the farm. This directly resulted in the power-hoarding behavior of the pigs. Power-hoarding behavior by Napoleon was very common.
