Everything Nwoye thought was morally right contradicted his fathers believes, so Okonkwo completely disowned his son and cut all ties after attempting to kill him. As a result, Nwoye moved in with the Christians and was able to escape his father 's abuse and controlling attitude. He was also able to escape from a faith that didn’t support his morals. Conclusion: How did the character develop Although much of the Ibo population reacted negatively to the forced Westernization of Nigeria, a number of people, such as Nwoye, accepted and benefited from the new religion.
With a father like Unoka, Okonkwo didn’t get the start as most young men in the village; however, he worked his way to the position of leadership of the clan. There was only one emotion that Okonkwo showed, and it was anger. This was his only emotion because it was how he expressed his feelings. Okonkwo had to leave his fatherland, but after returning home, he found his home unrecognizable. Towards the end of Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo decided to take his own life due to the changes in his tribe caused by the white missionaries. This makes it harder to distinguish if the colonists were responsible for Okonkwo’s death and the diminishing of the Ibo Tribe. However, these colonists are gradually pushing an agenda to the Igbo people where Okonkwo is critical against. The collision between two separate beliefs causes various conflicts occurring in Things Fall Apart that eventually causes Umuofia to fall apart. This undermines Okonkwo’s drive to succeed in traditional terms and his desire to be a leader in his tribe.
When people started converting to Christianity the Africans realized that “none of them [were men] of title” (Achebe 119). The Igbo people put men of achievement on a societal pedestal and give them respect only because of their accomplishments, which also means that there are outcasts. The people that have not achieved much are looked down upon in society and are seen as subordinate. Another example of Christianity’s acceptance is how they “educated their converts” (Source C). In the novel, Christianity’s customs contrasts to the Igbo in that the Christians accept individuals as they are and not by what they have accomplished.
As a young boy, Baldwin sought a gimmick in order to fill the void and fear of possibly living his life on the streets. The Christian church was an authority figure that offered a sense of fulfillment and comfort, providing him with an escape from reality. Although effective, Baldwin eventually grew skeptical and wary of the teachings that he once found meaningful as he realized the imperialistic nature of the church 's past and its limiting impact on the country. For years, religion was used by whites to justify their superiority and oppress blacks. Christianity represents a rigid way of thinking that discourages questioning the status quo and forces its disciples to continue with past tradition.

When Okonkwo was upset with his wives or any other woman in his life he would abuse them to show who has a seniority. Letting the village exile him was disappointing because it showed that he no longer had power. Through committing suicide he held all the power in his life.

Nwoye started out in the novel as different and as an outcast in his culture, but the cultural collision of the British colonists and Ibo people affected nwoye to the point of converting religions. The reasons for Nwoye’s change in his sense of identity include him being an outcast in his culture, his lack of confidence, and the new religions ‘saving’ and acceptance of Nwoye.

He wishes to change those around him to be his ideal version of manly: emotionless, strong, and unafraid to fight. He does not think about changing his own ideals in response to the changes brought about by the introduction of the white men in Umuofia, which ultimately led to his downfall.
