The Iliad and the Odyssey are both the epic works of poetic art written down by Homer after previously being passed down from generation to generation of storytellers and families as a form of entertainment. As all epic adventures need a hero, the hero of these stories was no less interesting and controversial than Odysseus. Although seen as the faithful spouse who climbed mountains and crossed valleys to reach his only love Ithaca and his wife Penelope, he was anything and everything the opposite of faithful to his spouse certainly like the Hollywood stars of today’s time who dominate the entertainment of the world markets. Odysseus who is the son of Laertes was the king of Ithaca. Odysseus was famous around Greece for his intelligence and tactics which also made him Athena’s favorite hero. Everyone also knew that Odysseus loved a challenge and adventure. One of the earliest records of Odysseus’s exploits is when he was fighting in the Trojan War. Before the war Odysseus, along with other Greek kings, were all vying for the hand of Helen, who was acclaimed to be the most beautiful mortal woman on earth. To keep Greece from erupting into bloodshed when Helen made her choice, Odysseus and the kings made a pact to stand by her decision and go to her defense if she needed help. Helen eventually married King Agamemnon and Odysseus married Penelope. When Helen was taken by Paris to Troy, King Agamemnon called upon the other kings to honor their promise and help him get her back. Some of the kings wanted to set sail with their spoils immediately while the other kings wanted to offer sacrifices. The kings all left away unhappy. Odysseus and his men went to the land of the Cicones and looted the city and killed the residents but instead of following Odysseus’s orders and setting sail Odysseus’s men wanted to enjoy their spoils. Unfortunately for them the Cicones who escaped the city went and called their allies and they came and took the city. Odysseus lost seven men form each ship’s crew but they were able to escape with some wine casks. While leaving the Cicones Island, Odysseus and his men landed in a mysterious place. When the scouts that Odysseus sent on inland did not come back Odysseus went out to find news about them. When he found his men they were under the spell of the lotus plant and he had to drag them back to the ship and lash them under their bench. Odysseus then set sail immediately right into the land of the Cyclopes. When Odysseus reached the new island he thought of what had happened during the visit to the lotus eater’s island. This time Odysseus picked out ten stout men and a cask of wine and set off himself. While exploring the island the men reached a humongous cave filled with large sheep and great cheeses. Soon after leaving Troy, Odysseus and his crew find themselves on the Island of the Lotus Eaters. When three of his men lose their will to go home from the effects of the lotus, Odysseus takes action. “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest:
Ithaca was the island in which he ruled over, and where his wife and child stayed during his absence. Like the hero Heracles, Odysseus conquered many monsters and accomplished many feats, such as killing the cyclops, Polyphemus, creating the Trojan horse, and escaping Scylla and Charybdis, the monsters that prevented him from getting through an abyss (they are also the myths that created the saying “in between a rock and a hard place”). He also fought to return home after he was forced to join in the Trojan War, and acted insane when a leader in the war came to accompany him on a boat to the war by acting like he was going to run his newborn child, Telemachus, over with a plow (unfortunately, that strategy didn’t work). Odysseus displays many heroic features throughout The Odyssey such as acting selfless and brave. He is well-known for his twenty year long voyage, creating the Trojan Horse, and his heroic actions. The Odyssey describes Odysseus’ long expedition to make it back to Ithaca including all of the setbacks he encounters. This includes all of his interactions with other gods and goddesses who guide him in the right direction with his decisions.

After Helen chose a husband Zeus made the suitors swear to defend the marriage rights of Menelaus. However, Odysseus eventually married Penelope Helen 's cousin. They later had a child who they named Telemachus.
These flowers make you forget everything. Being the careless people that are his men started to eat the flowers, and then forgetting everything they were suppose to be doing at the moment and further on. This is when Odysseus started to become an actual leader by having to treat his men like they were cattle and leading them to the ship, so they can be on their way back home and not being consumed in by the Lotus Eaters. Also at this point he is down men, because of the Cyclops eating two men for breakfast and when he came home that day and saw his men sitting in the cave. Then Odysseus actually became a leader and tried to keep most of his men alive, so he wasn’t the only one making it home to their families.

Odysseus is the king of Ithaca, and he is considered heroic and brave. He may be considered a hero where he’s from, but is as heroic as batman? Batman is a superhero that always saves the day. Odysseus is a king, and sometimes the choices he makes are not the best. He injured a cyclops and then taunted him as he left.
The natives there gave Odysseus and his men an intoxicating fruit of the lotus. After Odysseus and his men eat the fruit, they forget all of their thoughts about home and decide to eat more of the fruit. The only way that Odysseus can get him and his men back home is by dragging his men back to the ship and lock them up, Odysseus decides to go along with it. When Odysseus went back to Ithaca, He made the wise choice to go and see his wife Penelope. Odysseus was so brave to go see his wife because he didn’t know if she was going to recognize him at all or want to be with him for the rest of her life.
In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.
Summary: Cyclops In the story, Odysseus is still speaking to the Phaeacians, but is now telling them of his encounter with Polyphemus, the cyclops. Strong winds blew Odysseus and his men to Polyphemus’ island, where they unloaded and entered a cave that Polyphemus happened to live in. When he entered the cave, he closed the entrance with a large boulder that only he could move, trapping himself, his sheep, and Odysseus inside. After he ate some of Odysseus’ men, Odysseus devised a plan to get the cyclops to move the boulder so that the men could escape.
On the Cyclopes' island, he was interested in meeting the owner of the cave who had such fine cheeses. However, his men only want to steal the cheese and leave hastily because there was an uneasiness about the cave. Nevertheless, he fixes upon staying and not soon after, the cyclops Polyphemus returns. He and his men are now in peril because of Odysseus' recklessness. The consequence of his decision is that shortly after Polyphemus devours most of his men but this bolsters him to conjure a plan to escape.
But someone had to get them in the situation, and that was Odysseus. Odysseus has put them in every bad situation they have been in through the whole journey. Yeah he tried to get his wife back, so that means he is fighting for something. But does he really love her? He was unfaithful to Penelope two times.
On page 103, Odysseus promises to Helen that she won’t be harmed when Troy is invaded. Odysseus makes a promise that could only be kept if he is still alive. So, Odysseus assumes he will still be alive which is overconfident.
Well the definition of an epic hero is, “a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. ”(Dictionary.com) If that doesn’t describe Odysseus, I don’t know what does. He risks his life in many circumstances, and he’s widely admired for being the one of the reasons the trojans won the war. He is also affected by lots of events throughout his adventures.
