People have said that Odysseus is old and useless. His son, Telemachus, actually said that he was old but he expresses to Athena about how he wants him home. Odysseus is old because he has been trapped on Ogygia for a long time and became long forgotten. Odysseus is also described as brave because Athena vouches for him. She talks him up and tries to persuade other people into helping her free him. She says that he will show his worth by giving him his sword and shield and then put him into battle. Odysseus is also described as brave because he taunts Polyphemus after he escapes and calls him names.
