People have said that Odysseus is old and useless. His son, Telemachus, actually said that he was old but he expresses to Athena about how he wants him home. Odysseus is old because he has been trapped on Ogygia for a long time and became long forgotten. Odysseus is also described as brave because Athena vouches for him. She talks him up and tries to persuade other people into helping her free him. She says that he will show his worth by giving him his sword and shield and then put him into battle. Odysseus is also described as brave because he taunts Polyphemus after he escapes and calls him names. Athena is described as a goddess because she is a child to Zeus and she can shape shift into other people. Athena has a persona of a goddess because
In the epic, The Odyssey, written by Homer, the main character, Odysseus, spends 10 brutal years trying to find a way back home to Ithica after the Trojan War. Throughout his journey he is met with multiple obstacles including losing every one of his crew members. Although he faces physical monsters, I believe that his biggest enemy is his pride. Many believe that Odysseus’ best quality is how honorable he is, but I believe his honor is often mistaken for his hubris. This is very evident in book 9 when Odysseus and his crew are on the island of Cyclops.
Telemachus, Odysseus' son, lived hopelessly for the first twenty years of his life. During these years, Telemechaus lived in the shadow of his great warrior father. While waiting for his father's return, Telemachus was miserable and daydreamed of a life with Odysseus. Yet, the goddess Athena saw promise in him. Athena reminded Telemachus that he was the son of Odysseus and encouraged him to live his life to its fullest.

The poem, The Odyssey, has held up as a monument of literature throughout the ages, and for reason. It is an exciting story about the adventures of Odysseus, an intelligent, cunning, at times manipulative, sailor who defeats the city of Troy. After some decade long twists and turns, he returns home, disguised, kills a few dozen people who have been eating his food and drinking his wine. After it seems like the cycle of violence will never stop, Athena comes down and restores peace.
In the epic poem The Odyssey the main character Odysseus shows many qualities of an epic hero. Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, has a wife, Penelope, and his only son, Telemachus all struggle as Odysseus goes to war in Troy the day of Telemachus’ birth. Odysseus struggles and fights through obstacles that no mortal on earth has ever conquered. Odysseus demonstrates the qualities of a leader, speaker, and superhuman strength that every epic hero should have. Odysseus shows the characteristic of leadership many times throughout The Odyssey.
Is Odysseus a Hero? Think of someone in your life who is a hero to you. What traits do they possess? Is it the adventures they go on that makes them a martyr, their characteristics, or how popular they are? In The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, embarks on one huge adventure to save his people, but barely gets back home.
Also, when Odysseus returned home, she turned him into an old man, a homeless beggar. Homer narrates that, ¨Athena disguises Odysseus as a beggar and directs him to the hut of Eumaeus.¨ She plans with Odysseus and Telemachus, helping them to get revenge on the suitors. Athena had a huge amount of power, and the strength of her character helped Odysseus throughout his journey.
A hero is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. In the movie, Odysseus shows that he is a hero by showing off his bravery and courage to defeat several monsters. He showed courage when he faced the Cyclops, when he met Lotus Eaters, and when he went back to Ithaca to see his wife. Odysseus and his men went to the cave to show the Cyclops that they are better than him. The Cyclops got angry when he got back to his cave since Odysseus and his men were eating the Cyclops’ food.
Throughout the story, Odysseus demonstrates his courage that ultimately allows him to survive. One of these moments was during his journey back to Ithaca, where he faces a race of man eating giants called the Cyclops. Odysseus originally stops his ship there to relish a feast while on his journey back to Ithaca, but while doing so, out of curiosity explores the island. Soon, he finds a deserted house and decides to wait of the owner. The owner was unknowingly one the Cyclops, named Polyphemus.
Odysseus has grown from the man he was before, as now he finds comfort and safety in obeying the gods when in the past he did not consider their wishes. Odysseus has only returned due to Athena and he has recognized that and his compliance is founded in his appreciation and respect for her. Through Odysseus’ experiences on his journey, he learns the value of obedience and dangers of arrogance and ultimately, become a hero through the lessons learned.

Here, Odysseus tells Athena that she is all he has left and through her immortal powers, she is the only god still on his side who can help him in his time of need. Therefore, through Athena’s encouraging words, she is able to make Odysseus feel uplifted and more useful, especially as Odysseus is, at this point, very hopeless and miserably
You must be made all of iron" (279-80). While Odysseus is a strong man and a hard worker, it is always better to be on his good side, as he can be very temperamental( third source). We see that he has a temper multiple times throughout his journey, but the most prominent time, perhaps, is when he has the suitors killed when he returns to Ithaca. In conclusion, Odysseus is a hero because of his many great qualities.
Athena is known as the goddess of war. Odysseus was aided by her ideas on how to regain power through her tactical skills. The fact that the goddess warrior was on his side through the journey home, reclaiming his land, and killing the suitors was a huge advantage. Athena is very intelligent in how she strategizes and won wars in the past. Some may argue that Odysseus is the real hero but there were many times throughout The Odyssey where he needed Athena’s protection and input of logical ideas.
