He tried to cover up his past life by giving them a false name. “ Jay Gatz - that was really, or at least legally his name” (75). This shows that Gatsby lied about his name and told them something totally different to make other people think otherwise about his name. “ The idea was that they were lying to someone that they could potentially deceive” ( The lying game). It also shows that Gatsby can somewhat not be trusted because if he will lie about his name he would lie about anything else.
Which leads into his next lie about how wealthy he is. Gatsby also talks about his family being wealthy, and that he inherited a great amount of wealth from them. Which isn’t true because in the book it says, “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people”(Fitzgerald 105). This can be looked at in both a bad way and a good way. It’s bad because he lied to people about his wealth and his name, which is something you shouldn’t do.
Gatsby lies about his name and hides his past as James Gatz, and in the end proves himself to be untrustworthy. In fact, he doesn’t even seem to care when he is caught lying. After Tom reveals him for selling alcohol over the counter,
Gatsby is a wealthy man who lives in West Egg. He tells Nick that he is “the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West” (Fitzgerald, 65). He later states, “I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition” (Fitzgerald, 65). This is what Gatsby wants Nick to believe but, in reality, Nick tells the reader that Gatsby was a man by the name of James Gatz and he was the son of unsuccessful farmers.

Throughout the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby is quite a controversial character. A millionaire living in West Egg, Gatsby lives a lavish lifestyle and everything in his life is easily attainable, or so it seems. Many would believe that he is living the American Dream of luxury and happiness, but hiding behind his wealth and mansion is an entirely different Gatsby. He is characterized as a respectable figure who loves to throw parties that many attend, but is also viewed as a man who cannot be trusted because the stories of his past do not align with one another. The world of The Great Gatsby is home to many morally corrupt and spiritually empty characters however, the world itself is not a spiritual and moral wasteland.
