Nagaina, another character in the story is reckless when she wanted to take the garden back by killing the family and eventually killing Rikki Tikki. She wanted to do that, so they could have peace and quiet without having to worry about a mongoose patrolling the garden, and getting to them or their kids(para#51). The evidence demonstrates the character trait by showing when nagaina is reckless, she always wants to kill and fight so she can get her way everything. This character trait is similar to Rikki Tikki’s, because they are both reckless. Like in the story, when they both get very vicious when something as little as threatening or planning takes place. The character trait is different from Rikki Tikki’s because, tn the story he is not reckless because he had to try and sneak up on Nag, Nagaina’s husband so he can kill him, and stop them from killing Rikki Tikki’s family. When Rex and his family moves to Welch he changes from before and becomes really irresponsible. When Jennette and Rosemary are arguing about if Rosemary should leave Rex,things got heated and Jennette walked off and then Lori went and talked to her and said “She needs to be firmer, lay down the law for dad instead of getting hysterical all the time,” (Walls,208). This quote shows that Rex walks all over Rosemary so that he can get it his way and chose no be irresponsible. Rex doesn't understand that he needs to help his family and that he can’t keep on stealing money and expect everyone to be happy with him. Rex Walls can’t save himself or his family because of how irresponsible he is.
Rikki showed how brave he was when he was in the garden talking to a friendly bird named Darzee. The garden bully, Nag, came from behind Rikki with his hood spread. ¨He was afraid for the minute; but it is impossible for a mongoose to stay frightened for any length of time.¨(18) Instead, Rikki told and reminded himself that older mongoose kill cobras. Not long after that, ¨Rikki-Tikki's eyes grew red as he danced up to Karait…”(20) Karait was a snakeling who was as poisonous as a cobra, but Rikki had bravery and didn’t stand down.
The first reason that Rikki Tikki is not brave but stupid, is that after an angry nagaina took her egg back he followed nagaina when “she plunged into the rat hole” (p.27) he followed suit. Many would call that brave but he was almost guaranteed to die it was a stupid and pointless decision to go down there. There were other safer ways like waiting at the top of the hole so she either dies of starvation or tries to come out and get killed. He was too ignorant to just wait and without thought just dove headfirst into the hole.
Everyone is different in the world. There are times where someone is forced to decide what kind of person they are, like when life decides to test their patience. They can be someone who handles it calmly by calling on their inner Buddha, or they can be the type of person who throws whatever object that they find at the person that makes them angry.
