To begin with, I will be characterizing and analyzing the character Zaroff. Zaroff is meticulous and audacious. Additionally, he is meticulous in many different ways, when it comes to how he decorates his house he is especially meticulous. As Connell states, “There was a medieval magnificence about it; it suggested a baronial hall of feudal times with its oaken, panels, its high ceiling, its vast refectory tables.”(44) He decorates his house with precision, and that is how his personality is. He has a very unique and meticulous way of doing things, and the decorations in his house symbolize that. Connell describes the dining room as a fancy room with expensive dishes, and extravagant food. “The table appointments were of the finest--the linen, …show more content…
This can be inferred that he likes the thrill of almost dying while hunting, maybe he thinks that there is no way he would rather die. Zaroff could possibly want to die while hunting, he would die doing what he loves. He wants to be challenged in hunting and people are what challenge him the most. “What are the attributes of an ideal quarry?' And the answer was, of course, `It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason." (49) Animals cannot reason with Zaroff, so it has to be humans. Zaroff might want revenge on humans from a past experience he had with them. He lives alone on an island and hunts humans, that must mean that he does not like to be by other people. He hunts alone and when he was younger all he wanted to do was hunt, he likes to be alone and to feel lonely. He joined the military when he was younger, that is a bold decision for a young man. “I went into the army.” The army could have changed Zaroff, he might have not hunted humans if he did not go into the army. It is an audacious decision to join the army because you know the possible outcomes of it, but Zaroff did anyway. Ultimately, Zaroff is a meticulous and audacious human being because the decisions he makes are always bold but have thought put into
General Zaroff displays little empathy for human life while explaining his murderous game to Rainsford. “‘I refuse to believe that so modern and civilized a young man as you seem to be harbors romantic ideas about the value of human life.’” (Connell 10). General Zaroff reveals his philosophy that human life has no value and that killing for his own pleasure is justifiable. Both Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff are characters that accurately depict the characteristics of an adventure story.
He honestly wanted to befriend Rainsford, but once things go opposite of how he wanted, he decides to try to kill him. Zaroff believes that he is the top of the food chain, above humans that he considered “scum of the Earth”. Zaroff is not well mannered or respectful when it comes to fellow humans. Zaroff even captures humans and keeps them
Zaroff reveals that he intends to hunt Rainsford, since he finds hunting
Zaroff wanted to find the “ideal animal” to hunt (Connell 69). He wanted an animal that could reason with him. Unfortunately, the only animal that can do that is humans. He started to kill humans because of his boredom with hunting animals. Zaroff deliberately isolated himself from society so he could fulfill his satisfaction of wanting to hunt humans.
Children may think that their parents are evil for not letting them do something or not letting them go somewhere, but in reality they always have a good reason for saying no. In our world today and in the stories we read, there are people who are more evil than anyone 's parents. In each of the stories “Cask of Amontillado” and “The Most Dangerous Game,” the two characters Montresor and General Zaroff are both very evil and two faced. General Zaroff is more evil of the two men because he does not value human life, he makes his prey feel comfortable while they are staying with him, and he gives his prey no chance for survival. First of all, General Zaroff is the more evil of the two men, because he does not value the human life.
Most people when they hear “The Most Dangerous Game” they think of bull riding or other dangerous games that don’t involve death. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful cliff hanging story that follows the days of a castaway on the island of a crazed hunter. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff
“I am strong, I hunt the scum of the earth”(17). He only kills them because he wants to hunt something that can reason, something that can change its mind when faced with a life or death situation. “But they are men,” said Rainsford hotly. “Precisely,” said the general”(17). Zaroff is an apex hunter, and he demands the ultimate prey.
However, he is now ready to fight to the death, which shows that his opinion has changed. That just makes him no better than Zaroff “the murderer”. It seems as if Zaroff has passed on his role to Rainsford and he is now the new Zaroff. How else can he sleep so well if he feels remorse over killing a fellow human? Zaroff told him he could leave the island if he won but he stays.
And the answer was, of course, `it must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason… Great Guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder. ’”(Connells 11). Referring to the quote, it exposes how Zaroff tells about the prey and Rainsford got surprised. He even tells Rainsford that he hunts different types of people.
And the answer was, of course: ‘It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason,’” (21). Zaroff has a struggle that he knows no one else can help him solve. This shows his thinking process; he takes this internal problems, and he maps out exactly what he needs in order to be satisfied. He finally comes to this gut-churning idea to hunt humans; they are the only species smart enough to match Zaroff’s skillset.
When he disagrees with his idea he changes his mind about not hunting him. A utopia like this, from Zaroff’s point of view would seem amazing, but the opposite from anybody else’s point of view. Living in this utopia as a victim would be unbearable and
Hunting is fun for some people, until you're being hunted. “The most dangerous game” is a short story written by Richard Connell. Zaroff demonstrates that he is confident, anxious, talented. First Zaroff is a very rich individual, i know he is talented because on ( pg.221) Rainsford was describing how big and nice zaroff house was “It was a huge, beam-ceilinged bedroom with a canopied bed enough for six men that Rainsford followed the silent giant.” Another way Zaroff is very rich because he also has his own island where he hunts more than just animals.
He sees all the trees and bushes all bringing back a flash or memories and forgotten feelings. How fun it was to hunt, or especially how fun it must´ve been for Zaroff when he got to kill humans. He stops and thinks to himself and thinks it all in his head and he just needs to find the house and leave as soon as he could. They come upon the house.
