During the Civil War each side had some advantages and disadvantages. Before the Civil War there was the election of 1860, President Lincoln was elected president. The south knew that Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery, so the south seceded from the union. Then there was the attack on Fort Sumter, and the war began. “The war that ensued started at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861, and lasted four years”(Confederate.., pg1).
Civil war was one of the bloodiest and destructive wars in American history. It was defined as the war between the states. This war brought many positive and negative changes to America which resulted in many consequences. When Abraham Lincoln became the first republican president who was against the concept of slavery, many southern states separated and formed a new nation. Abraham’s promise was that he would not allow the United States to be broken down to small, squabbling countries.
The American Civil War Officially started on April 12, 1861, when confederate forces, under the direction of President Jefferson Davis, fired upon Fort Sumter. The Civil War continued for nearly four years, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives and the destruction of once prosperous cities. However, after the Confederate Army sustained numerous losses, General Robert E. Lee elected to surrender the Confederacy to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House (Georgia Encyclopedia). After the Confederacy surrender, President Jefferson Davis set-up a temporary government, made plans to flee to a sympathetic country, and eventually retreated to Georgia after the Union army attempted to capture him. Ultimately, On May 10, 1865, Jefferson Davis was captured by union forces in Irwinville, Georgia, imprisoned, and charged with treason (Georgia Encyclopedia).
After Lincoln was elected as president, 7 states seceded from the Union. Although his views on slavery weren’t as extreme as some candidates, propaganda made southerners believe that he would ruin their way of life and drive the country into the
From November 1860 to May 1861 we have had 11 of our Southern states secede from the United States of America. They threatened to secede if our current president Abraham Lincoln was elected into office. The reason all 11 states seceded is because they believe that the government was becoming too strong, and they didn’t want them to tell them how they could live and how they couldn’t. In other words they didn’t want the government to tell them if they could have slaves and if they couldn’t. The Southerners felt that if they stayed with the United states that the Northern states would begin to control them.
Would the Union be free while the Confederate states had slaves? The bloody, gruesome war lasted four years and involved many men, women and children. Photographers captured the truth about the war. Matthew Brady, a famous photographer, took many photos that had a lasting impact on people’s perceptions of the war.. The photos of the Civil War affected the American people as a whole.
He lived in the north during the civil War but but yet he still didn’t agree with Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln's assassination was not justified because he freed slaves and he was a great leader. Abraham Lincoln’s assassination was unjustified because he freed slaves. In 1863 Abraham makes his final proclamation frees slaves. At the end of the war he officially ended slavery in America.
The South wanted to keep slaves while the North wanted to abolish them. In conclusion, the primary cause of the civil war was not slavery instead was the issue of states rights. The Northern armies won the Civil War and the the South returned to the Union. “The Civil War started because of differences between free slaves states and the power of the government that said if slavery was correct or incorrect.”(The Civil War in America Prologue). Slavery was right at that time but now it is wrong.
Before the Civil War Officially began Lincoln was elected president of the United States. Lincoln stated his belief that secession was both wrong and unconstitutional (Hart). Lincoln opposed slavery and in his campaigns he had said he would abolish slavery in the western territories. The south didn’t like that Lincoln was trying to prevent the growth of slavery and that meant they couldn’t buy slaves in the territories. The Civil War helped to end
Although, the Missouri Compromise and the discussion of the future of slavery could have brought this to a head. The topic of the war between the states and the meaning of the Confederate battle flag has interested me ever since I was in elementary school. My father is a Confederate reenactor who has participated in many events relating to the war. Much of my previous knowledge about both these subjects come from him. Due to the many controversial and negative issues going on in today 's society relating both the war and flag, I have decided to research the main cause of the bloodshed and the true meaning of the Confederate battle flag.
