The New York Times and the Richmond Daily Dispatch were two newspapers active during the American Civil War with the Times reporting from New York City in the Union and the Dispatch Reporting from Richmond, Virginia in the Confederacy. They frequently reported on similar issues but had different ways of presenting the information. On the date of October 14, 1863 several key areas show this difference. These areas would be the reporting on the war, the type of local news being reported, and the ads and classifieds present in the paper. On October 14, 1863 the Civil War was transitioning from a small period of relative peace back into the heat of war. Two events illustrate this change, namely the torpedoing of the federal frigate New Ironsides …show more content…
In terms of local news both the New York Times and the Richmond Daily Dispatch reported on many of the same topics. One such topic was various criminal occurrences and the trials that resulted from them with an example being the “Trial of Galvin” article in the Times and the “Late Homicide” article in the Dispatch. In both of these articles the details of the case are discussed and the recent developments in them. More common than crime coverage was the coverage of both local and national politics. In both papers several articles were dedicated to this subject with some of the articles being some of the longest in the paper. This can be seen through the “The Legislature” article in the Daily Dispatch and the “City Government” and “Local Politics” articles. 6,12,13 A reason why these subjects appear to be a vast majority of the local news is due to both local and state politics and events have a larger impact on the lives of those in the community. In terms of foreign affairs the New York Times seemed to have a higher number of articles relating to the topic and a higher opinion of the countries mentioned within.5 In the Richmond Daily Dispatch articles relating to foreign affairs were few with few with a majority showing a negative opinion. This most likely occurred due to several events. One such event was Britain's refusal to acknowledge the …show more content…
In the Richmond Daily Dispatch the ads and classified that are present primarily seem to revolve around slavery. An example of this would be the “wants” section of the paper which exclusively feature requests for black workers.16 Another example can be seen through the “Negroes for Sell and Hire” section which contains the largest percentage of ads in the paper further highlighting the focus on slavery.8 The New York Times when compared to the Dispatch appears to have a much higher quantity and more diverse selection of ads and classifieds with several pages in the paper being devoted exclusively to them. Most of the ads that are present also seem to advertising for various businesses while also features a large section focusing on the Sales at the Stock Exchange featuring a large amount of financial information.1,7 The differences between the two papers arise from several reasons with one such reason being the differences in location between the two cities. New York City's location on the coast allowed it to serve as a major port while Richmond being primarily a landlocked city was denied this opportunity.2 A second reason for this is due to the international relations that the North and South maintained. At the time these papers were published the North maintained active relationships with many foreign powers such as the British
The Civil War. Louis P. Masur’s book, The civil War: a Concise History, Is a book that gives an overview of the civil war from 18 to 1800, Providing multiple causes an consequences that emerged from the war. The book begins by reviewing the origins of the war. Chapter one covers the issues between northern and southern states and the tension over right and slave possession. .The Civil War changed the country in many ways. Thousands of men on both sides died during the Civil War. “The Union Army lost 352, 528 men and the Confederate Army lost 258,000 men” (Doc F). Innovative ways to fight came about during the Civil War.
Political parties began in America when two of George Washington’s advisors, Alexander Hamilton, leader of the Federalist and Thomas Jefferson, leader of the Democratic Republicans disagreed on political issues. Newspapers also influenced political parties. The Federalists and the Democratic Republicans were political parties that were created when an agreement could not be made for what would be best for the country. Hamilton was influenced by Britain to encourage trade and manufacturing, while Jefferson favored farming. Hamilton also favored a strong federal government, while Jefferson believed it would take the state’s power.
Before the American Civil War, we struggled with the concept of slavery based on our economic and moral differences. People who lived in the North believed that slavery should be abolished since they did not grow crops that needed an abundance of slaves. Moreover, they thought that slaves should be treated like all human beings based on the constitution. On the other side, Americans who lived in the South thought slavery should not be abolished as their crops demanded twice as much work than the ones in the North; therefore, they needed much more workers working in their field and that’s where slaves came into view. They also thought that Africans were inferior because of their skin color and origin.
To say the time period following the Civil War in the United States involved a lot of change would be a understatement. Between the years 1870 and 1900 the people of the United States lived through a period of great change. Not only did they witness technological advances that would change their daily lives, they also saw new laws and organizations formed. All of this was done in hopes of improving the country. Many of these changes came about because of the type of businesses that were formed.
April 12, 1961, marked one of the most historical events that have ever occurred in the United States -the Civil War. This war was fought by the Union (Northern states) and the Confederates (Southern states). Several factors contributed to the clash of both sides, such include: trades, tariffs, states’ rights, and the idea of slavery. After four years of fighting, the Southern states lied under complete destruction. On May 9, 1865, the fighting was over -the Union had won the war.
The Gettysburg Battle was the turning point in the war because each side experienced a serious event in which the Northern morale had boosted and Southerners are starting to back down and throw in the towel. Back in the 1860’s President Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States of America. This caused an uproar in many of the Southern states because they believed he would outlaw slavery. Then, several states seceded after a while to make the Confederacy. Each side soon entered a Civil War for different reasons, the North’s was to bring back the other half of America, and the South’s to become its own country.
This paper will define the Battle of Vicksburg, why this battle was significant to the American Civil War, and the repercussions of this battle. The Battle of Vicksburg was from May 18 – July 4, 1863. There had been several
McClellan retreated thinking his army was outnumbered two to one when in actuality he had 70,000 men while the South only had 25,000. The newspapers exploded with the news. The South was ecstatic while the North’s morale dropped very low. McPherson showed how Lincoln had written his famous Emancipation Proclamation but had stored it in a desk drawer waiting for a victory.
thousand went on strike on July 20, 1899 after months of planning to boycott ("William Randolph Hearst"). All of the other newspapers lowered their prices back to pre-war prices of 65 cents for 100 except Joseph Pultizer’s Evening World and William Randolph Hearst’s Evening Journal. At this high of a rate Newsies could not make enough for housing and food. The reason many newsies started protesting was because they believed that Pulitzer and Hearst were being greedy saying, "Ain't that ten cents worth as much to us as it is to Hearst and Pulitzer who are millionaires? well i guess it is.
The United States has had many conflicts in the course of its history. Particularly speaking, these conflicts typically arise due to differences between either side. The North and South had many differences that led to a large conflict. The North, made of abolitionists, relied on industries and mass-production in an economy. Rather than having a mainly paid workforce like the north, the South’s agricultural economy boomed, due to slaves, and cash crops, such as cotton.
The late 19th century consisted of rigid work hours for children, the growth of strikes, and the use of yellow journalism. It was a challenging time for anyone below the upper class to live in. This is demonstrated throughout Newsies, a Broadway Musical displaying the challenges from this time period. Child labor, a major part of the movie, was the way of life and consisted of young children doing hard work as a vital part of the nation’s economy and income of families of the time. Another part of the movie, strikes, were the people’s way of refusing to work as a result of not getting their desires.
The penny press has a major impact on the world of news, journalism, and even advertising. Before the introduction of the penny press, the newspaper industry had a complete different look. From the way that they were written and produced, to the way that they were bought and delivered to the reader, they were different. The penny press is responsible for changing the newspaper industry into something that we are able to recognize today.
People don’t usually read The Portland Mercury for the weather and news about local accidents. The coverage is heavy on the editorial side; it covers city council and local politics but the bias the reporters have is not subtle. Overall the paper does the job of bringing news to a community in an alternative way, giving certain stories a different angle from what is found in the other Portland
Over the course of the semester I have been analyzing the content of my community's newspaper the Hot Springs Sentinel Record based upon my reading in the book. Before I took this class I was clueless of the world of community journalism, I have learned so much about it now and have a great deal of appreciation for community papers. The hard work and dedication that is put into community newspapers by their staff, surpasses that of any big city, large circulation newspaper, in my opinion. Due to the smaller audience of community papers, details are of greater importance, the struggle of deciding when to print stories even if it means offending certain people is much greater, and the obligation of producing a quality paper every single time is held at a higher standard. Based off of the knowledge I have gained from this course over all I do not believe the Hot Springs Sentinel Record exemplifies what it truly means to be a community newspaper.
