Ways to Prevent Bullying in School. On a rough average, students spend seven hours of their time, daily, at school, and dedicate approximately four more hours to study, do homework, and/or attend extracurricular activities somehow related to their academic prowess. It is safe to state, then, that schools become a second home for children, where they will spend and devote most of their time from early childhood to young adulthood. Why are alarming problems like bullying so recurrent, then? Countless cases filed in court regarding hate speech in schools, reported cases of teenage suicide, and an alarmingly higher rate of anxiety and depression statistics in students all point to one cause in common: bullying in schools. Otherwise, where would kids learn to use the bad words they call out other students with? Where would they get those bad habits, and horrible attitudes? Children that bully other children are the cause of bullying, but not the reason it hasn’t been able to stop for decades now. Now that they are acknowledged as such, schools and specialized staff like counselors must be aware of the necessary preventive measures and disciplines to stop future imitations that endanger the security of this second home. A lot has to change, then, for bullying to stop being such a prominent issue. More than campaigns, talks, excuses and punishments, children themselves must properly understand the issue and the severe consequences it implies. Students, regardless their age or group, with little to no boundaries or even a sense of respect for authorities tend to be the specific reason for so many cases of bullying to develop in schools. These students are labeled as bullies, or “problematic children” that schools and authorities love to put in a corner and let them reflect on their behavior.
