How To Prevent School Shootings

Resolutions are vehemently being sought to protect schools from possible attacks and to objectively eradicate deadly school shootings altogether. Commonly, security officers are placed in schools in hopes that increased surveillance will inhibit violent outbreaks (Crawford and Burns 2016). Mixed evaluations have been found in association with security officers, while some benefits reportedly transpire, experiences of disparaging consequences remain a regrettable reality as well (Crawford and Burns 2016). One solution that some propose is giving teachers guns in their classroom, and it has become a hot topic in Washington recently. Teachers in the United States should not have guns in the classroom because students could accidentally get ahold of the gun, teachers have to leave their students in order to find the intruder, and there are already many everyday items that teachers need in their classrooms rather than firearms.

Teachers should be able to possess guns during school hours because the teacher could protect the students, be able to prevent school shootings, and neutralize other threats.

I have seen how a tragedy like this can hurt the victim, friends and family and an entire school system. This act was created with a specific target in mind and there were several warning signs that the school and friends of the attacker should have picked up on. He had given clues such as telling people to stay home from school and asked what would happen if a specific wing of the school was shut down. In the end school shootings have been a big problem and over the years the government has done many things to protect us from deaths by firearms and school shootings. They have been making it harder and harder to obtain a firearm which is really what was necessary to do. Making it difficult to get a firearm into a school and knowing how to handle a school shooting situation will save lives if anything were to happen like that again. I feel gun control laws will get stricter and the schools and world will get safer.

Similar to many others in my country, I am proud to be an American. I love my country, and what it provides for it’s citizens. However, I know that I can feel even more honored to be a citizen of the United States of America. I understand that no matter where one goes in the world, he or she will never be able to find a perfect place. A place where everything is great all the time is not realistic at all. But I also know that while there can be on perfection, there can still always be room for improvements. With improvements, I see myself being even prouder to be an American in the future. Personally, I would love to see my vision of America become a reality.

School shootings are starting to become a norm in today 's world. This is something we can only take precautions for but, we cannot completely stop school shootings from happening. Banning guns is not the option because the shooters are still going to find a way to get their guns. We should not punish everybody for the stupidity of some people 's actions. "At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado two teens went on a shooting spree on April 20, 1999, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide" (Columbine Shooting, 2018). One day, one child, one gun, one school. Now, as saddening as it is to admit, we live in a world where school shootings are a part of everyday life, and there is nothing being done to stop them. As most can recognize, most of the media is more focus on what the President is going to say after the shootings happen, rather than focusing on what we as a nation are going to do to stop these tragic events. There have been a few ideas when it comes to solving this issue, and truthfully, most of these ideas will fall flat on their faces; meanwhile, arming teachers seems to be a possible solution. Arming teachers will deter shooters, secure students fears from outside threats, and in the worst case scenario can stop a school shooter before they can commit mass murder.

As a concerned citizen and college student, I recommend several policies to create a safer environment at school campuses. As there has been an increase in school shootings within the last ten years, the safety of students on campus has become a major concern. The problem of the increase in the number of school shootings has resulted in an unsafe environment for students affecting overall development. I am writing to seek your assistance on the issue of schools not having proper safety measures to prevent and respond to mass shootings, this issue must come to an end by finding an appropriate resolution.

As life goes on, we have no clue what is going to happen tomorrow, as many of us just live life as it goes but in reality, we should think of situations such as a fire, intruder, kidnapping etc. situations. There has been staff and students killed in shootings at Columbine high School in Colorado in 1999, Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012 and now at Stoneman Douglas in Florida, where or who is next? No one is expecting this kind of situation nor are they well prepare for them. Schools preform drills such as shelter-in-place, lockdown, evacuation, drop, cover, and hold in case of an earthquake etc. but in reality as much as the students practice the safety drills in that moment each person will forget everything and have so many other questions

Being safe at school is something that a person shouldn’t have to worry, about but it has become a concern for a lot of parents, teachers, and school administration. Increasing security in high school, middle school, and elementary school would help control and protect the kids from possible threats, as well as creating a safe learning environment and show kids that police officers are good people.

Reason #1 for teachers being able to carry a gun, protection of students. Imagine being a parent in this day and age were you have to worry about your child going to what was a safe environment in the parents age. What is now a risk for a mentally ill and damaged individual to kill as many innocent people as possible. This should not be a worry for the child or parents but it has to be because at this point any school is a threat. So a possible factor in decreasing shootings is arming teachers, by doing this teachers can fight back instead of shielding or running from the shooter. Reason #2 teachers can defend their students by changing this law and using correct training teachers should be able to carry a weapon. By doing this not only insure safety it will give relief for parents all over the country. This tactic will give school staffs a chance to outnumber a possible shooter. Would you want to live in fear? Especially at a place that you feel safe. A place that you are required to go to by law. A place that children roam the hallways, learning and having fun. Can you imagine, going to this place every day, until one. Someone bursts through the school, into the cafeteria, the library, an auditorium, or even in a classroom. Every day the threat looms over us. Haunting us with its increasing numbers. We live in fear of a school shooter. And I will not stand for it. Will You? In 2018, there have been 8 school shootings. 8. That is a staggering number. The total body count is unbelievable for just 2018 alone. Ridiculous. How have we not done anything about this? How have we not increased our gun control laws after Florida.

When seconds count the police are only minutes away or, in the case of my high school, they are only an hour away. When a school shooting or stabbing happens you want your children to be standing directly behind the police officer; but, what if that’s not possible? What if a blizzard happens and the police have trouble finding your school? If a police officer is not present when a school shooting happens, you want your children to be near the next best thing, an armed teacher who knows how to, and can, protect them.

The school environment is one that has been stressed to be a safe and enjoyable place to learn. However, for many individuals, that is not the case. Students around the world have very unique experiences at school, which can unfortunately become abhorrent. According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), and average of 96 Americans lose their lives to gun violence each day (Gun Violence by the Numbers). There are several causes of death by gun violence, but one of the causes that have become a growing problem is school shootings. Each school shooter has an individual story and should be treated disparate from the rest, but there are several similar characteristics between many school shooters throughout history.
