He shared the stories of a wide variety of people while he embarked on a journey across the country in a short bus. By revealing the common issues and judgment within society, Jonathon’s book advocated for the people who have any sort of disability, and he brought to light the beauty of each difference. For those who would want to learn about the thoughts and feelings of people who have experienced rejection because of a label, Jonathon Mooney’s book would be an excellent selection because of the real accounts and stories. The book offered an emotional connection that other texts could not provide. Therefore, The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal should be a common read for everyone in order to learn about the real accounts of people labeled as having learning
Freak and Max have a special relationship. In day care Max kicked everyone, including the teachers, except Freak. He never kicked him even
Max doesn’t like to read or write, while Freak loves to. Freak sees potential in Max-one that Max doesn’t see in himself. So he decides to give him this dictionary full of words like xyloid and obfuscate. Max does enjoy the present “This is the best, getting Freak’s dictionary”(98). Max’s teacher’s begin to see that potential too “...she finally gave up on trying to trying to make me talk in class, and instead she waits until study hall, where she asks me the same questions alone and I tell her the answers”(81).
Max lived in a duplex accross the street from Max. so they became forever friends. In both the movie and the book Freak dies because his heart grew too big for his little body. Both the book and the movie are amusing. Both Freak and Max were bullied. Both in the book and the movie Max had a disorder with his body that prevented him from playing sports.
He showed selflessness by teaching Kevin new things, and perseverance when he never stopped guiding Max on where to go . Freak, Kevin, opens up Max’s perspective by teaching him new things, and teaching him to imagine great adventures. Max has a learning disability that prevents him from grasping the concepts that he has been taught. Freak would go on walks with Max, on their walks Freak would see nearby objects, and turn them into an adventure. In chapter seven of the story Freak the Mighty Freak says “There are fair maidens to rescue! Dragons to slay !” Freak woke Max up to go on an adventure early in the morning. While on adventures Kevin will use complex words and explain the meaning of the word to Max .Kevin was a provider of guidance for Max. When a gang and the leader, Blade, were chasing and taunting them, Freak kicked Max’s side to tell him the direction to go in. They came to a dead end and ran into this pond and made it back home, safely. Kevin was a true hero because of his selflessness, and his
In the book Kevin passed away at the hospital, but in the movie Kevin passed away at home. In both someone talk to Max after Kevin died. They were different people though, in the book it was Dr. Spivak and in the movie it was Gwen. In the book before Kevin passed away he gave Max a journal so he could write down all their adventures in it, Max put it in a box. In the movie Kevin gave him a journal and it said Freak the Mighty on the front.
Freak the Mighty the book and The Mighty the movie have many similarities. Max, Kevin (Freak) Gram, Grim, and Gwen are all the main characters. Max and Freak are bullied in both the book and the movie. The ornithopter, a special toy, was played with by Freak and Max. Both boys were pursued by Tony D. and Freak sits on Max’s shoulders. Max has his meeting with the principle, then soon after Freak chokes on food.
Murphy lacks mobility and sensation in his lower body other than the feeling of occasional muscle spasms, and has limited movement in his upper body below the neck including his arms. Murphy writes the story as it recounts events throughout his entire life, from childhood onwards. He was sixty-two when he wrote the novel. The story provides Murphy’s anthropological commentary on the life of a person with a disability and how society views and treats people with disabilities (Murphy, 1990).
The theme of this book is learning to love and care for the people around. How I came to this conclusion is by how Liesel acts towards Max, her foster parents, Rudy, and her neighbors. Liesel cares for people even if they weren't like her and she doesn't understand why there is hatred in this world. She wanted the world to be a happy place for everyone including Jews to be friends with one another. On page 426 in ‘The Book Thief’, when Rudy’s father went to war Liesel could relate to Rudy because “her mother. Her brother. Max Vandenburg. Hans Hubermann. All of them gone. And she’d never even had a real father.” Also, when Mama was depressed about Papa going to war, Mama would sleep with Papa’s accordion Liesel acknowledged “that there was great beauty in what she was currently witnessing, and she chose not to disturb it” (Zusak, 429). Finally, when Liesel’s papa gave a Jew bread during the parade and what Liesel did during the parade, she gave Jews bread by placing them in the street.
At the end of the summer in Freak the Mighty, Freak and Max get to go back to school. Minus the fact that he has never been in one before, Max is put into all advanced classes so he can be with Freak. The reason they are put into classes together is because Freak helps Max write and learn vocabulary by making him look up words he doesn’t know in a dictionary. Freak also helps the teachers understand that Max does know the answers but, he just doesn't like to speak in front of the class. Both in school and out, Max helps Freak with mobility by carrying Freak on his shoulders. Max then depends on Freak to tell him where to go, and just focuses on the ground. When Max’s father showed up in the middle of the night to “take Max with him”, Freak does the brave thing of helping the police look for his best friend. As the police find Max and his father, Killer Kane, Kevin stands up tall and sprays Kenny with a concoction that burns when it touches Killer Kane’s eyes. After the struggle is over Kenny Kane is arrested and is sent to jail for the murder of Annie Kane, attempted murder of Loretta Lee, and attempted murder of Maxwell Kane. Many friendships are formed by helping someone in need, like how Freak helped
Fear is something that controls almost everyone. People are always worried about being harmed in some way. Fear guiding our actions is shown in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, 1984 by George Orwell, and Supergirl a TV Show. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is narrated by death as it tells the story of a young girl getting adjusted to life in Germany with her new family. 1984 by George Orwell is the story of Winston, a party member, in the time of Big Brother, the ruler. Winston turns against him, then he is caught and changed to love Big Brother. Supergirl is a TV Show that is the story of Superman’s cousin Supergirl as she goes around her city of New York saving the city. All these sources show one common purpose. Fear guides our actions by
Forty million people a day view Instagram stories, 79% of teenagers use Snapchat once a day, and 51% use it at least eleven times a day. In fact, teenagers use on average five screens a day (Patel, “10 Tips”). The use of social media makes teenagers happier and cures their boredom after school. However, problems arise when young people find all their satisfaction on social media. All this time spent on social media and whether you get enough “likes” could result in a bad outcome and cause poor health. Some teenagers know social media leads to loss of sleep, more anxiety issues, and even failing to communicate with the outside world (Schupak, “Does Technology”). The Book Thief by Markus Zusak has a similar theme. Set in World War II, Liesel, the main character gets taken from her mother to live with the Hubermanns on Himmel Street and her brother perishes along the way. She grows close to her new papa Hans, mama Rosa, as well as Rudy, a boy who influences her tremendously. Her family welcomes a Jewish man named Max, into hiding in their basement. Max and Liesel gain a very strong friendship until he must leave for the family’s safety. In the end, the Allied Powers bomb the city, leaving Liesel as the lone survivor, leaving Liesel to face an extremely difficult time. In the end, the narrator, Death, reunites her with Max. Liesel lives a wonderful life and passes peacefully. In the novel, The Book Thief, Zusak proves the satisfaction found in corruption and harmful choices
In the story when He reached down to Freak and let him see the firework, Max does states “‘I pick him up and I’m amazed” “There are so many people crowded around, all he can see are feet and knees, and people are lifting their little kids up to see the fireworks explode like hot pink flowers in the sky, and so I just sort of reach down without thinking and pick up Freak and set him on my shoulders” (32)(cite page number where quote occurs). This shows that Max’s just reach down and pick Freak up to see the amazing firework. In the story when Freak is going to save Max from his father, Freak does states “‘I’m warning you,” “he says in that fierce bold way he has. He’s got a squirt gun, one of those big blasters models that holds about a gallon of water.Killer Kane is looking at me, he’s looking at Loretta all crumpled and meaning, he’s looking at Freak” This also shows that Freak is saving his friend from his father.
Max and Kevin have a mutualistic friendship because they both get something from each other.(A mutualistic friendship is when two people get something out of it)This book is about a two young kids that got their lives changed for a long time. I’m about to tell how Kevin changed Max's life for a long time.
In “Freak the Mighty,” the author, Philbrick, creates different moods and tones to create emotions and character development. In the story, two boys named Kevin and Max meet in preschool and reunite in jr. high, when Kevin, a witty cripple, moves in next door. As Max and Kevin reunite, the author creates a mood of amity. As the team of misfits runs into trouble with a ruffian named Tony D, they find themselves working as a team to find a way out of misfortune. When a ingenious Kevin realizes that Tony D is just a belligerent, ignorant, drunken fool he stands up to him and sarcastically calls Tony D a cretin. He retaliates defensively and superior Freak has to define his clever word of choice. A tone command expresses the situation of burden
