Childhood cancers are rare, their diagnosis and treatment can take a mental and physical toll on these children and their families. Pediatric Oncology is a great career choice today because a pediatric oncologist could save a child's life and be a hero to a family in distress. Pediatric oncologists must possess a wide range of skills. One of them being physical stamina for long standing hours (“Oncologists” 486). This is a very important skill to have because it is common for medical professionals to work many hours a day. Problems arise in healthcare all the time. Due to this, it is important to possess problem solving skills too (“Pediatric Oncology Career Description,” par. 3). Being around child loss almost all day gets tough, you witness sadness, despair, and heartbreak everyday. An important job for pediatric oncologists is to help comfort a family and show them compassion. Pediatric oncologists should not worry about advancing in their career, because there are many opportunities to advance in pediatric oncology. One advancement in this field is moving to head of a research team or medical department (“Oncologists” 487). A pediatric oncologist could then achieve prominence in these fields by publishing articles and medical studies of their finds (“Oncologists” 487). Due to rising diagnoses in cancer, more and more researchers are needed everyday to help fight the battle of stopping cancer (“Pediatric Oncologist: Job Outlook & Summary,” par.
The author recommends supporting this organization because she think it’s a great way to find and better scientific research. Furthermore, it helps kids in need and parents who don’t have money. For example, an eight year old girl named Ainsley who had a swollen lymph node was referred to St. Jude because it wouldn’t go down. Ainsley and her family soon found out she had non-Hodgkin lymphoma and went through 98 weeks of
Kids Path provides specialized care from infancy through eighteen years of age. Being one of the few organizations in the U.S that provide hospice services to children they currently have over 50 patients. While the Kids Path building is not a place for the kids to live such as the Beacon Place, they do provide many activities within the building to provide help and support to children and their families. The goal of Kids Path is to allow children to live a life of normalcy. They can provide hospice services to children within their home, just as they do with adults and receive all the same services with the multidisciplinary team.
Approximately 100,000 children die of cancer before the age of 15 in the world every day. According to the Journal of American Medical Association, roughly 80% of children with cancer in high-income countries, such as the United States, survive. With that in mind, we must be thankful for the facilities we have close to home, such as Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Personal Statement Last summer I had the opportunity of participating in the U54 Sumer Research Program and it was an incredible experience, because it helped me in my professional development and discerns my future carrier goals. I want to return to MD Anderson Cancer Center, because it counts with a variety of physician scientists and physicians that integrate their clinical work with innovating research and this will improve my development as a future physician and researcher. Being able to do research in my area of interest and having the experience of a clinical rotation in pediatric oncology help me diced that I want to become an MD. My actual professional goal is to be a pediatric physician specialized in oncology, orthopedic surgery
The development and successful application of preventive therapy for meningeal leukemia, followed by the intensification of systemic chemotherapy, has progressively improved the rate of cure of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia (Rivera et al. [1289]). Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall survival rate for childhood cancer from 20% when the hospital opened in 1962 to more than 80% today (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital). Treatments for this type of cancer is very expensive and Danny wanted to help families focus more on their child than worrying about the costs of
While in this program I wish to develop a stronger sense of my passion and field for science and to find a pathway that I would like to go on. While learning I also wish to get to know peers and companions and to socialize and make connections with my fellow peers. One of the pathways that I would like to go on at this moment is I would like to go on the medical pathway and become an oncologist which is a doctor for the study of cancer. Doctors play such a vital role in our everyday
Pediatric brain tumors are characterized by abnormal cell growth in the brain's tissue and are treated through a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Pediatric brain tumor treatment is associated with late effects, such as physical disabilities, learning disabilities, behavioral changes, hearing problems, vision problems, a secondary cancer developing, and seizures. Leukemia is cancer of the blood cells and is characterized as an uncontrolled production of immature white blood cells. Treatments of leukemia include chemotherapy, radiation, and bone marrow transplants. There are lasting effects associated with chemotherapy/radiation, such as physical and mental changes.
In third grade, I was assigned to create a project illustrating what I wanted to be when I grew up. At this time, due to my positive experiences with doctors and my desire to help others, especially children, I decided to describe the role of a pediatrician as my future career. Throughout my childhood, whenever asked about my future aspirations, I confidently declared that I would attend medical school and become a pediatrician. However, as I developed, the answer to this question slowly began to evolve as I gained a deeper understanding of my values and the people I desired to serve through medicine.
My dream is to become a pediatric oncologist at St. Jude Children’s Hospital, so this program is a big opportunity for me that will help prepare me for my future
To achieve this goal I will need to increase my knowledge of how we treat the four main cancers that our patients have. These include lymphoma, myeloma, leukemia, and aplastic cancers. To achieve this goal, I have created a learning plan (see appendix A) similar to the Quality Assurance program the CNO has designed to ensure nurses engage in safe and competent care. An entry-to-practice competency related to this practice under the knowledge based practice domain is “proactively seeks new information, knowledge and best practices for use in the provision of nursing care” (CNO, 2014, pp.
There is nothing they can do. Two weeks after this news, your baby boy passes away in your arms. Now imagine this happening to 250 kids everyday worldwide. Childhood cancer is not rare, despite this there isn 't much funding or awareness for this disease, but together we can change that. When you think of cancer you probably don 't think about a child, or if you do you don 't realize that Childhood Cancer and adult cancers are genetically different.
Unsurprisingly, MD Anderson being one of the best cancer hospitals in the world has drawn me towards the 1st Year Medical Student Program. The prospect of being a part of the bleeding edge of scientific discovery in the world of cancer research is captivating to me. Combating cancer through scientific research at MD Anderson that may one day benefit my future patients would be an unforgettable experience. In addition, the clinical opportunities offered by the 1st Year Medical Student Program would allow me to interface with some of the best clinicians in the world. I hope to cultivate my knowledge under their mentorship so that I may become a better physician for my
Parents and family members with a child of any age would also benefit from the information delivered in this speech although older children may not receive such impactful results. Significance: This speech is relevant to my audience because the impact of such a significant diagnosis is a life changing and emotional event for families and the need for direction and guidance at such a critical time in their child’s life is essential. My audience should understand that providing their child with early intervention therapy will impact their child’s life indefinitely.
Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease past infancy for U.S. children. However, thanks to better therapies, more than 80% of U.S. childhood cancer patients now become long-term survivors. Survival rates can vary depending on the type of cancer. About 420,000 childhood cancer survivors live in the U.S., with much more around the world (St. Jude Children 's Research Hospital) this shows that cancer is one major diagnosed disease found in children under the age of 15. Cancer patients will have long-lasting chronic conditions during treatment.
For the majority of people, pursuing a career in the medical field is a career which should be avoided at all costs. Whether this profession is a surgeon, a nurse, or a psychiatrist, the long hours of study and work (which are necessary for these occupations), are not in most people’s definition of a “fun job.” In addition, after the long years of study come to an end, the most feared moments arise, the time to pay student loans. Nevertheless, none of these obstacles intimidated Juan Delgado in order to pursue his dream as a healthcare professional, more importantly, to help our community. Delgado, the oldest of two, was born on December 3rd,1991.
