The Men who Built America impacted the lifestyle of many Average Americans. These men were great, but also not so great. There were Rubber Barons and Captains of Industry in this time. A Captain of Industry is someone who’s fortune positively impacted the lives of those around them. On the the hand, a Robber Baron was a person who has a big fortune by using selfish behavior and using others to grow their riches. John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and Henry Ford are all men of this time. Two of them being Captains of industry, and the other, a Robber Baron.
John D. Rockefeller was a very important reason why the 2nd Industrial Revolution was a success. Rockefeller was a captain of Industry because he started the company of Standard Oil. Standard Oil started out as a small company, but then Rockefeller made a big deal with Cornelius Vanderbilt, which put his oil on Vanderbilt’s railroads. He was a captain of Industry for a couple of reasons. Carnegie worked under the rival of Vanderbilt, Tom Scott for most of his life. After Scott died he tried to fill his shoes, but it didn’t work out, so he started his own company called Carnegie Steel. Carnegie did very important and impressive things with his steel. He built a bridge that crossed the Mississippi from one side to the other. He also built up many cities out of steel; but Andrew Carnegie was more of a Robber Baron. Carnegie horribly mistreated his workers by giving them very long days and very low pay. Carnegie steel was a very rich company but Carnegie couldn’t even give his workers and average pay. Also, Carnegie was a not brave at all, while his company was not going well, instead of working to make it better, he camped out in Scotland and let his chairman Henry Frick do all the work. A “robber baron” is defined as one who uses immoral methods to get rich. John D. Rockefeller, king of oil and the owner of the Standard Oil Company, was known for these unscrupulous tactics. Rockefeller’s peculiar ideas of the “law of nature” in accordance with his “primitive savagery” allowed this stealthy businessman to manipulate his way to the top. Although Rockefeller’s oil monopoly attributed to the wealth of the American economy, he destroyed the morality of modest men to accomplish ultimate power and prestige making him one of the wealthiest industrialists during his time.
The context of Andrew Carnegie is the robber baron. Industrialisation the expansion of factories and the mass production of manufactured goods like steel. The Industrial Revolution of the early 1900s set the foundation for the rise of Carnegie steel. While some say Andrew Carnegie is a caption of industry because he wanted to help others who were poor evidence suggests he is a robber baron because he made the vertical monopoly which makes it harder to compete with him and he had very poor working conditions and even killed some people with those horrible conditions. Andrew Carnegie made it hard for anyone else to produce steel and other various items so he could eliminate his competition which he pretty much did.
He was also one the wealthiest men of his time and helped transform the steel industry. Andrew Carnegie could be considered to be a hero in many ways. He helped create jobs, transformed the steel industry and also helped other industries, and was an influential philanthropist. Many of the people at the time were poor and living in poverty. There weren't many jobs; and the one that they did have didn't pay enough to sustain a family.

He was an American industrialist who gained a fortune in the steel industry, and afterwards became a philanthropist. As a captain of industry because he has done a great duty to shape our country to what it is now, by creating an empire that has built and urbanized our cities as well as philanthropic deeds. Carnegie had lived from 1835 to 1919 and was born in Dunfermline, Scotland. His parent’s names were Will and Margaret.

From a boy born into a modest life, to a man who industrialized the steel industry and made millions, he is a textbook example of a rags-to-riches story. Being one of the most important people of his time, he created a steel powerhouse and brought America and the world to new standards. Even with all the obstacles and mistakes, he became such and gained a mass fortune, remaining one of the wealthiest men to have lived.
After the Civil War, the Second Industrial Revolution was established due to America’s rapid growth for industry and economics. Capitalists during the industrial period of 1875-1900’s were either accused of being a robber baron or a captain of industry. Some capitalists leaders who were accused of being a robber baron or captain of industry included J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Andrew W. Mellon, and John D. Rockefeller. A robber baron is a business leader who gets rich through cruel and scandalous business practices. The captains of industry is a business leader who wants to better the companies in a way that it would be positively contributing to the country.

He did this by, converting iron into steel and built a new steel plant for his company called, Carnegie Steel Company. In the excerpt, “Who was Andrew Carnegie,” the author says, “Carnegie changed huge batches of iron into steel, which was much more flexible than brittle iron. Carnegie threw his own money into the process and even borrowed heavily to build a new steel plant near Pittsburgh.”
John D. Rockefeller gave away $540 million dollars before his death at the age of 97. With this money he created two, of the world's greatest research companies and helped pull the American South out of poverty. Without Rockefeller’s gracious donations to our country through education, medical, and donations to help our country, he most definitely was a Captain of Industry which helped our country get to where we are today. Captain of Industry is a fancy term of saying that this person has helped our country thrive and get to where we are today. John D. Rockefeller is a prime example of a great leader and a captain of industry, without him we would not have the successful oil business we have today.

Authors, Charles Morris, Matthew Josephson, and James Nuechterlein point out to historians that the world is full of many different angles and ideas that one can view regarding the Robber Barons or the successful men of the industrial revolution.
I categorized Andrew Carnegie a Captain of Industry after learning of his philanthropic views and actions. Carnegie not only obtained a wealth from working hard and wisely investing but used most of his fortune to make a difference on the world. Carnegie own words categorize the essence of generosity and kind hearth. I cannot disagree with him when he stated that “The man who dies thus rich dies disgraced”
