Rome is said to have been created by the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, sons of the god of war: Mars. They were left to drown in the Tiber river, and were rescued by a she-wolf. Romulus and Remus killed the person that left them to drown and built their own city. They both wanted to be king and they argued. Finally Romulus killed Remus on April 21, 753 BC. First came the Early Republic where the monarch held an election for the magistrates (consuls). They served as commanders and chiefs of the military. In 450 BC the first laws was established on the “Twelve Tables”. These laws were displayed in Roman Form and gave rights such as civil rights, and property rights. This lead to the creation of the senate in 300 B.C. The senate was made up of wealthy plebeian families. With a new way of government, the Roman Military started to expand. The Roman empire controlled its people and land but, the Han controlled its people and land more effectively. Of course, Rome could have succeeded in controlling its empire but, by looking at the political, technological, and social aspects, it is clear that the Han left a larger impact to the world and revolutionized life by exercising more effective control overall. The Han controlled its people and territory more harshly than the Romans. Although they were harsher, they also worked more efficiently and took initiative.
The Etruscans had ruled over the Romans for hundreds of years. After they were free, the Romans established a republic. This was a government in which citizens elected representatives to rule with their interest in mind. This government had a Senate composed of three hundred men. The members were voted on to life terms.
The Roman Republic was successful in many ways. Some ways include, being able to learn Etruscan engineering techniques. They learned how to build an arch. They also, learned how to build a structural design. They were also successful because they created a government, which people can choose their own officials.
For example, every adult male had a vote, unless they were disqualified. As stated in our World History textbook, Rome was divided into two group; Patricians, who were the wealthy landowners and the Plebeians who were small farmers and merchants. Each group had a role in government. The Roman Republic's government had three branches, almost like the United States has today.
The History of Ancient Rome A long time ago, there was a piece of land that stuck out into the Mediterranean Sea. It had a river that was called the Tiber River. The Etruscans were the first people that gave the Romans their gods, the toga, and the alphabet. Rome was the center of one of the world's greatest empires. It began as an unremarkable settlement. Rome had become powerful by conquering territory. But Rome soon discovered that size has its problems. Controlling an expanded empire, meant a need for more food, clothing, weapons and supplies.
About 2,770 years ago, the city of Rome was founded by Romulus on the Palatine Hill after his brother Remus died due to an argument between the two brothers. Remus and Romulus were brothers who wanted to found a city to avenge their grandfather. The brothers could not agree on anything about their city, where it was going to be, what it was going to be called, so the two brothers decided to build two different cities. Remus mocked the small wall Romulus built to defend his city so out of spite, Romulus had his commander Fabius kill Remus.
While the RomeEmpire become successful in its military conquest in expanding its territory and heightened its military power to the highest level, which transforms Rome from greatest "conquering people" to "greatest governing people" (Morey,1901), beneath it was a negative upshot. Romans morphed to become a highly greed and barbaric people on earth. In the end the consequences of these actions however, was painful enough which makes Rome bleeds as social unrest was uncontrollable, and I believe that her subjects weaken her as great empire. Rome was undisputedly the world's "greatest power," when all --if not--of once powerful empires on earth became her subjects and bent their knees in submission to her power.
The General Assembly and Senate established a sense of importance in Rome. The General Assembly was made up of Plebeians, and the Senate consists of Patricians. The terms General Assembly and Senate are two of many terms still used in the US Government today. The Romans were led by a king who was approved by the senate and a vote of the people, which is also displayed in the US Government. This is displayed in our presidential elections.
In the third century, Rome was experiencing extreme amounts of turmoil. Some of their problems were coming from tribes outside of Rome. Germanic tribes were attacking from the north and Middle Eastern tribes from the east. They were undergoing economic depression and rapid changes in leadership. How did external and internal conflict lead to the beginning of the fall of Rome in the third century and which type of conflict was more detrimental to Rome?
