2. How would you use the influence and expertise you will gain at the University of Sheffield to change something in your community?
Around 1 in 4 people in the UK experience a mental health problem yearly. 1 in 3 don’t seek help; either due to lack of resources or the fear of being judged. This has led to many falling into a downwards spiral of worsening mental health, ultimately leading to an increase in substance abuse and suicide rates.
Studying at the University of Sheffield will equip me with a vast array of skills, allowing me to work to the best of my abilities to provide my peers with top healthcare and battle the stigmas surrounding mental health to ensure more people seek help as soon as they can. I wish to use the expertise I gain to educate the public on how mental health conditions aren’t something to ever be ashamed of.
The large underfunding of mental health services within the NHS has led to many experiencing a lack of resources in their local areas; approximately 6000 patients had to travel miles to receive treatment in 2016, and quality of treatment is largely based around postcode lottery. Although the NHS has implemented a new national programme attempting to reduce the distance patients must travel for good care, the effect may not be as great if many are still afraid to seek …show more content…

These experiences will allow me to expand on my knowledge regarding the wide variety of mental health conditions and provide me with well-exercised skills to approach a diverse range of personalities. I have currently taken part in multiple fund raisers for mental health and upon graduating, I want to dedicate a large portion of my free time to supporting charities based around mental health and educating the younger generation to largely decrease
