In today’s world education plays a vital role in everyone’s life. No matter what you do or what you intend to do, education is needed. It was clearly not the same in Frederick Douglas and Bich Minh Nguyen’s world. In both cases the author’s education wasn’t needed and took a back seat because of their race and other factors. Frederick Douglas the author of the article “Learning to Read and Write” shares his experience of how he educated himself but it didn’t bring any change in his life.

Joe Ramirez J.West ENGL 1301.M1 22 September 2017 Outliers Geniuses In 2008, journalist Malcolm Gladwell published the book “Outliers” a best-selling book about how we measure success as a society. In the book Gladwell discusses the different ways we measure success and touches upon common misconceptions regarding the matter of how society comprehends success. One chapter entitled “The Trouble with Geniuses, Part 1” highlights the contrast between success and Intelligence quotient, this chapter really intrigued me because Gladwell makes valid points in arguing about how a high IQ does not automatically equal success and backs up his argument by giving examples. Although some may argue that success measured through intelligence many others like Malcolm Gladwell would think otherwise since every person measures success differently in society.

Educational achievement tests often serve as reliable predictors of school marks compared to tests of intelligence and special abilities, but still cannot completely replace them. It is notable to mention that the individual’s attainment measured by general intelligence tests are indeed broader and the products of less formal and usually less recent learning experiences compared to the ones measured by standardized achievement tests (Aiken, 2003c).
