In this paper, I will discuss my thoughts on media and journalism to be more specific. I will voice my thoughts and opinions on how journalism and media shapes everyone’s thoughts and views. We will discuss and answer the following questions; Does information media have a social responsibility? And if the answer is yes, why do they have a social responsibility? Also, what is the role of the information and news media in the shaping of political opinions? And lastly; Have electronic media and their convergence transformed journalism and news conception? The development of digital and electrically eras of media contributed to the media convergence. Media in whether it’s in the form of music, movies, fashion or social media platforms or even television. These types of media are for entertainment purposes, meaning it gives its fans or views art in which ever form is most appealing to that specific induvial needs. Convergence meaning or describing the changes that have happened over the last decade within most media companies. The most heard of convergence of media is the change of television, news, radio and movies can now, be streamed through the laptop, smartphone. In the early 1930s the only way the public could listen to radio was through a radio player and now through media advancements the radio can be streamed through the internet on a simple smart phone. I do see the transformation of electrical media and journalism and news. For example, (Moyers&Company, 2012) stated that CNN, the network is available on the television as well as it now has a CNN app that can be accessed via tablets or smartphones as well as on the internet. With so much media convergence happening it can easily blur the lines on what can and cannot be talked about when it comes to politics and news …show more content…
The journalist job is to inform and encourage debates on topics. However, the role has much changed freedom of press, the obligation to the question the government. The right for us as the public to know about all the actions that can be taken towards our futures. The journalist has the right to inform, but when a journalist puts politics above democracy the news suffers as well as the public. For the journalist and media news there must be boundaries and no influence on the political opinion. According to
Being published in 2007, this work greatly accentuated the problem of a society where the media dictated exactly what and how information would be transmitted to society. However, in the modern technological era, the media’s content is less important to society due to our ability to select, and as a result the argument presented by the author, along with most of his concerns, is
Malcolm X famously said, “The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power, because they control the minds of the masses”. Although the modern media is powerful, it is always changing not only technologically, but in the way journalists report and act. Commentary over the last several years has centered on the negative changes of the media that journalists are unethical, stories are approval driven, and opinion is included in the news. Many Americans as well as journalists are concerned in the apparent decline in moral of the media.
Along side the news media manipulation, it has a pleasant appeal to the general public. The news media gives the public general information so that people can be up to date. News reporters are a prime example on why the news is favorable to the public. Journalists, another word for news reporters, are free to write what they like if they produce well written stories. In the article by Sharon Beder, states that journalist have 3 components of norm objectivity, “The first is ‘depersonalisation’, which means that journalists should not overly express their own views, evaluations, or beliefs”.
Society expect to be constantly entertained; they have become so concerned with things such as who the latest star is dating, scandals, or dumb people doing rather idiotic things. Much of society have been consumed in their personal instant gratification and what makes them “happy”. When on an off chance that news does show things that are serious and impactful(not necessarily positive things that is happening in the world) people have become so numb that the best they could do is feel sympathetic and at worst continue on with their day. The other part of the problem is that those behind what is being published and shown on the news media have been absorbed in their avarice nature, whatever allows them to make as much profit they do. “Writing thousands of hours of coverage from what could have been summarized in a couple of minutes every few weeks, a new rhetorical strategy was developed, or-let’s be generous-evolved”(6), Saunders describes the new formula formed by mass news firms that would yield the most profit.
Media has gravitated toward the center of our culture over the years. Mr. Neil Postman writes in his book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, about his observation of the various forms of media throughout this nation’s history. Furthermore, Postman discusses has the media is shaping and influencing our culture. He writes about the idea that media has caused the world to lose focus of true information and inspiration. Postman’s thesis revolves around how the core values of media, such as news, have changed over the course of history.
Jordan N. Schloss July 24, 2017 HUM/186 Social Media Paper Society today has become accustom to resorting towards the internet for almost all their issues, information and updates on certain trends. Heavy reliance on the internet can result in less amount of people buying magazines, newspapers and even watching television. With information becoming so easily obtainable these days on the internet and along with the creation of social media information being shared amongst people online are not just only local information but global as well. Social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram even allow their users to view each other’s lifestyle and locations using videos and pictures that people post. Depending on who you even follow
According to the
One hundred years ago nobody heard about the news or current events from Facebook or the newest tweet. Until fairly recently the most up to date news had to be heard through the grapevine or read in a newspaper. Since the creation of the internet and the mass media that comes with it, information can now be spread all the way across the world in the time it takes to hit the enter button on a computer or phone and upload it to the internet. Some people think that this is a bad thing because so many things that are uploaded can be either false information or simply information that is misleading and could teach individuals the wrong thing. However, if mass media is used in the right way it can be beneficial to the accessibility of valuable information,
The duty of journalists is to inform the public of information and do so diligently, with accuracy and to reduce harm to the public. This is a conflict that journalists face. Ethical principles are a cornerstone for journalists credibility. However, instances where values clash may become an area of conflict. During times of turmoil and civil unrest, journalists are responsible for seeking the truth of an event and reporting it.
