According to the United Nations Organisation, Human Rights can be defined as those rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination (Human Rights, United Nations [APA], n.d.). Women’s rights are the fundamental human rights that were enshrined by the United Nations for every human being on the planet earth nearly 70 years ago. To the eminent English jurist, Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780) sees law “It is the rule of action which is prescribed by some superior and which the inferior is bound to obey”.
And Prof. (Sir) John W. Salmond (1862-1924) posited that law is “The body of principles recognised and applied by the state in the administration of justice”. There are various laws enacted to safeguard the lives of women globally. The following are some of the international human right instruments, which specifically address women’s rights (Women’s Human Rights [APA], n.d.):
i. African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, articles (8(2), 29 and 43) ii. African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, article 18(3), along with the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa “Maputo Protocol” iii.
