Since the beginning of time all human beings have had a basic desire for freedom and equal rights. When we think of slavery many things come to mind such as the civil war to put an end to slavery and also in more modern times leaders like Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, and Frederick Douglass dedicated their lives to equal rights for everyone. Because of them, there was a change in the way people viewed each other and laws were changed eradicating slavery in the United States.

Humans- Not For Sale. An estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked each year in Africa. “Africa has the highest incidence of child labour in the world. According to the ILO, 41 per cent of all African children between the age of 5 and 14 are involved in some form of economic activity” (Child Labour Rooted in Africa’s Poverty). Human child trafficking is a global phenomenon happening right now in every country in the world, also the second fastest growing criminal industry. Human trafficking of children in Africa have negatively affected the children due to the families and family values being brainwashed from them, and instead they are forced to commit acts of sexual prostitution or slavery.

The United States abolished slavery in 1865, the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction" (The United States Constitution). We never thought that over one-hundred years later there would be a new form of slavery that has affected so many people around the globe. Human trafficking is another name for modern-day slavery, where the victims involved are forced, coerced and deceived into labor and sexual exploitation. Most human trafficking victims are forced into the trade by the false promises made regarding job opportunities. Many women from third world countries are lured into this trade with the bait of false marriages or false jobs. Many of the victims are forced with violence or indirectly with psychological blackmail into the sex trade. Human trafficking is the worst form of abuse that can be inflicted on an individual. A trafficked human being suffers from mental, and physical abuse, leaving them with lifelong mental illnesses.

Human trafficking occurs every day in the country. Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery. Traffickers use violence, threats, and other manipulative tactics are used to force the victim in to sex, labor, or other services against their will (Winebrenner & Aeronautical, 2015). Florida is an active region for human trafficking, an estimated amount of 18,000 to 50,000 people were trafficked. Human traffickers believes that the risk for trafficking humans is low. Investigations, prosecutions, and penalties were increased for traffickers, however, many traffickers believe that the high profit margin to be worth it (“Human trafficking,” 2016).

A main issue that lives around us today is human trafficking. Many people are affected by human trafficking. Although it is not that noticeable, it is happening all around the world even in our own community. We may not realize how often it happens or who it affects. It affects men, women, boys, and girls all around the globe. This is a crime that I believe can be stopped with the help of everyone around the world. I plan to become a criminal justice lawyer so I will be able to help others that are being affected by trafficking. This crime of human trafficking through sex, labor, and smuggling drugs is prevalent in our world today.

Human trafficking is the illegal transnational and international trade in people for the purpose of servitude. Human rights organizations and different people are calling it the modern form of slavery. People are trafficked for a number of reasons: prostitution, sexual exploitation, forced labor, slavery, organ harvesting, forced marriage, military service, and even selling babies to couples who can’t have children.

When she was eighteen, Chong Kim, a normal girl from Oklahoma, was abducted by the man whom she had been dating. He and other traffickers forced her and a large number of other young women to live in storage units where they were then transported across the United States as part of a prostitution ring. Several years later, she finally managed to escape through a vent in a Las Vegas casino (The Survivor Archives). Unfortunately, Kim’s story is not a rare occurrence. It is important to note that a majority of people mainly focus on sexual trafficking while it also includes activities ranging from ownership of slaves to the importation of cheap labor. In fact, in his study, Weitzer acknowledges that, “What gets sidelined in the focus on sex trafficking is labor trafficking-in agriculture, manufacturing, fishing, mining, and domestic service” (8). Most people often thought slavery was part of the past; however, human slavery is part of our current society and has been an on-going issue around the world. Human trafficking is a type of slavery that involves forced or bonded labour, sexual servitude, child labour, or involuntary servitude all over the world. It is important to note that sex trafficking contributes to more than half of human trafficking and most of these victims are women and young girls.
