Journal Entry: 8 Chapter 8: “I Don’t Even Know Anybody Who Went To College.” Date of Entry: 7/13/16 During this chapter, Sampson graduated sixth grade. He passed all of his classes with A’s and B’s, but he was embarrassed to show his friends his report card. In his class if you got good grades people would make fun of you, so Sampson acted like he failed to protect his reputation. He was so happy that sixth grade was over because once you were in seventh grade all the younger kids had to give you respect. Unfortunately, that’s not how things went. When he arrived home, he excitedly told his mother about his good grades. She was proud of his accomplishment, but told him he wasn’t going to Dayton Street Elementary next year instead he
He was one of the two kids in his town that would go to this private school. “My mother decided soon after our move to the Bronx that I was not going to public school. She was not a snob, she was scared.” (47) His mother knew things had changed since the last time she was there.
