The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are one the most profound and well known NFL cheer teams today. The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader’s reputation was compromised from the beginning due to their skimpy uniforms and proactive dance moves. When the cheerleaders first came out, many people found them as a sexy tease. As the cheerleaders gained popularity, they became flooded with publicity deals and contracts. According to Mary Hanson (1995), many of the cheerleaders modeled for Playboy Bunny and other modeling agencies (p. 64). If the team was sexy as a whole it would be better publicity than if it were individuals creating media attention as sexy (p. 64).

In the article, “My Coach The Bully”, the author, Jan Hoffman deals with the issue where majority of the coaches using bully as a coaching technique to the player. He argues that bullying that have been acted by the coach can have an enormous impact on child’s emotional and physical well-being. Words such as vengeful, belittlement and demeaning reflect bias language which he show towards the issue. The tone of contemptuous, disapproving and concern have been used to inform the parents, school administration and those involved in the welfare of players about the effect of bullying by the coach as a method of teaching regardless of what could happen to the player. In his argument, the author begins with a few facts to build up the issue.

Cheerleading’s stereotype is traditionally girls in tiny skirts, with bows in their hair, and lots of makeup. However, it started out as a male’s sport. For about the first forty years of cheerleading, women were not allowed to take part in the sport. Now, ninety-seven percent of all cheerleaders are female, according to Serendip Studios. This same website also showed that the male presence is still very prominent.

New York State assemblywoman, Nily Rozic, and California assemblywoman, Lorena Gonzalez, in their article, “Cheerleaders- Until They See Their NFL Paychecks”, question the conduct of hardworking cheerleaders in the National Football League. Rozic and Gonzalez’s purpose is to provide a basis for discussion about the unfair wages of cheerleaders and to call the NFL to reflect and alter their policies. They create an empathetic tone to highlight to their female, sports fan audience that while the NFL brings in plenty of profit, very little of it goes to the cheerleaders they employ. Some of the fundamental qualities required to be a successful cheerleader counter the stereotypes constantly perpetuated in media. The mean-girl stereotype does not exactly fit this narrative of them working hard and supporting athletes to performing complexed stunting and tumbling, and the memorization of chants and routines. It is unfortunate that the majority of cheer-related representation does not reflect reality, and paints the athletes in an unfavorable light, because the millions of girls who cheer are unable to identify with positive role models or even multi-dimensional people. I feel that film and television should try to depict these characters in a more positive light. These characters should be more dynamic and we shouldn't generalize

Youths should be banned from participating in sports such as dodge ball and cheerleading. Dodge ball should be banned in schools because stronger kids have an unfair advantage. “A person who encourages other people to do or support something.” (Merriam Webster Dictionary). For my whole life I have always dreamed of being a cheerleader. Someone who interacts with everyone, smiles through anything, and helps get the crowd involved. It’s the atmosphere, the people, the close knit group of girls.

Men and Women, boys and girls all can participate in this event, bloomers, bows, and megaphones are just a few things most think of when they hear the term cheerleading. Cheerleading as a lot of rich history when it comes to sporting events, cheerleading was easily found in most high schools by the 1960’s. It has played a side by side role along with football for numerous of years starting out for some schools as just a pep squad to forming a team. There are lots of different things that can be accomplished during cheerleading whether in their own competitive events or at a game, they can tumble, stunt, and even dance. But the true question is, is cheer.

Should cheerleading be a sport? We’ve all seen cheerleaders at football and basketball games, flying in the air, doing 4 flips at a time, yelling at the top of their lungs, rooting for their team. But what you don’t know is that cheerleading and their shiny pom- pom’s are not an actual sport. You’d think it be a sport with all the competitions, and the number of accidents. Cheerleading has more accidents than gymnastics, and gymnastics is considered a sport.
