Sound Assignment
"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" is a classic soul song originally recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1968. Over the years, the song has been covered by many artists, each bringing their own unique interpretation and style to the classic track. In this response, we will examine three different versions of the song, those by Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & The Pips, and Queen Latifah, and compare the differences in their arrangements, lyrics, and instrumentation.
Starting with Marvin Gaye's version, we can see how the singer's soulful and passionate interpretation of the song is evident in his smooth and powerful vocals. Gaye's voice is the centerpiece of this version, with the arrangement choices being simple and focusing on his voice and the instrumental accompaniment. The rhythm section provides a driving beat, while the horns add a soulful touch to the overall sound. The simple arrangement choices in this version emphasize the power of Gaye's voice and allow the listener to fully immerse themselves in the emotion of the song.

Gladys Knight's powerful and soulful voice is the centerpiece of this version, with the arrangement choices emphasizing her voice and the upbeat rhythm section. The use of backing vocals adds to the overall soulful sound, and the prominent use of horns and piano in the instrumental accompaniment adds a more dynamic and energetic feel to the song. Gladys Knight & The Pips' interpretation of the lyrics is more energetic, with the upbeat arrangement choices adding to the overall interpretation of the
Young wrote this song about his 1948 Buick. This love song describes all of the hardships and good memories Young had with his car. Not only does Young love his audience, but he also loves the privileges he was able to receive. The privilege in this case was the Buick. Another love song he wrote was “Only Love can Break your Heart”.
This song have showed us very different representation of what it means to be our own person and what this world has come to. Macklemore shows us makes us realize we buy things based on what’s popular and makes us fits in, how we let material items determine our identities and change who we are as people, the people we look up to make us do things and how Americans buy items based on an advertisement. He brought back a way that was effect knowing we would listen because it came in a form that was direct, but you would not understand if you did not listen so closely. With what message we were giving are you really going to let matlertic items make you as a person or are you going to be yourself creating your own identity by standing outside
A visible aspect of the Delta Blues in Rock n Roll is the lyrics and the extent at which artists use them to express deep emotion. The rolling Stones, sang “Paint it black” with the aim of allowing the audience to look into the life of a troubled fellow who wishes his life was all painted black just like his moods. The Alabama shakes, a modern rock band showcase the same emotion when they sing “Bless my heart, bless my soul. I didn’t think I’d make it to 22 years old.” in “Hold on” Similar sadness can be seen in Robert Johnson’s “Come on to my kitchen” who continuously asks his lover to come back to him.
Through their music, both artists have been able to spread their messages of hope and inspiration to millions of people during the Civil Rights Movement. In addition to being powerful songs, they have extremely meaningful messages behind the reason for their creation. Both Legend and Seeger use their talent of music to express their thoughts about the struggles faced by the African American community in hopes of achieving social change. Additionally, these songs contain uplifting and motivating messages that encourage the protestors to stay strong, fight for their rights, and to help protests to remain alive. Despite hardships, these inspirational pieces remind individuals that there is always hope for change when everyone works together peacefully.
This song is characterized by a rhythmic swing, catchy lyrics, and a joyful trumpet solo. This song glorifies the life of a poor traveler and turns it into a fun and less serious situation. It signifies and strengthens the argument that much of the happy music made by black people at the time was to break loose from racial tension and
The song has a more positive take on life. Watsky talks about how all of his hard work will pay off and that he will have time to rest once he has moved on. He accepts that he cannot live forever, so he is going to make the most of it while he is here. The song is about worrying what you can control, and to stop dwelling on situations that are out of your hands. The track incorporates a chorus that really ties in well with the rest of the track.”
In the Story of Jimmy Wayne’s “Walk to Beautiful”, Jimmy Wayne was a homeless kid who bounced in and out of every foster care system. Jimmy Wayne only 13, but very smart and intelligent at his age, he was tired of the abandonment of his own mother. Jimmy was hurt the most when his mother abandons him at a bus station, driving off into the night with her lover. Jimmy Wayne hurt and confused didn’t let it stop him from succeeding in life. An elderly couple Russell and Bea Costner, who owned a wood shop, took Jimmy Wayne under their wing and provided the opportunities for him to thrive.
At first, the song is very slow and quite but as it continues, it builds up very loudly and more lyrics are added. Midway through the song, a piano solo from Mary Lou Williams begins giving the song more rhythm. After, the lyrics become louder and more constant. I believe the song, being a sacred song, was meant to sooth the audience and inspire happiness in the readers. I am able to visualize a church or ceremonial setting as I listen, and almost feel the song reflects a prayer.
This new musical style gives an inspiration to Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, and other gospel singers to adapt gospel sounds to pop songs. In addition, some pop
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” has been performed by many inspirational instrumentalists, and singers, who have added their own personal touch to the classic. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of “Somewhere over the Rainbow,” can be compared and contrasted with Art Tatum and Judy Garland’s version in many ways. This short essay will include how each artist used elements of music differently, including texture, timbre, melody, harmony, and rhythm. First, the timbre of Garland’s voice is soft and sweet with a lot of vibrato.
I notice a lot of pathos was being used throughout the song and video. As the song and video builds, we start to see conflict begin to happen. We witness the gay man beaten to death by the anti-homosexual mob and the lover couldn't make it to the scene in time to save him. While this is happening, the soft piano then turns to a louder melody matching the tone that Hozier is singing in. We also see a quick glimpse of anti-homosexual protests on a TV screen.
The song serves as the finale of the musical and explores the theme of love and loss. The song is sung by the character Lily, who tragically died young, and her ghost appears to the protagonist Mary to explain the mysteries of the garden and of life itself. The song's lyrics are full of poetic imagery and introspective musings, and the melody is haunting and emotional. "How Could I Ever Know" is a powerful and moving conclusion to "The Secret Garden," leaving audiences with a sense of wonder and hope in the face of life's trials and
In some parts he also uses ironic phrases to help visualize the description being made. Tone shifts when the woman singer comes in
Whitney Houston’s iconic acapella opening to the song is what catches her listener’s attention. This is when Whitney begins to build the dynamic of the song after the first chorus, when the song shifts into a stronger and bolder feel. She then begins displaying her uplifting and powerful vocal abilities. Whitney is known in this song for her capability to hold certain notes throughout her performance. Unlike Dolly, who was calm, Whitney is crying out and declaring her love.
Moving on to the chorus wouldn 't be smooth without the E chord as it would be a difficult transition to the first chord of the chorus if the verse was to end on an F#. The unpredictability and the fun mood of the song is caused by the E chord which is used as a tool to change the key of the song to A. all in major, the chords A, F# & D are the only ones played in the chorus and the smooth transition back to the verse is due to the chorus ending on a major F#. The mood is positively affected by a horn within the chorus. Piccolo solo played by David Mason brings upon a perfect timbre and shows a different type of creativity as it plays a countermelody. The guitar played by George Harrison is blends in perfectly which also adds timbre while cello is added in about 2:04 and plays softly in the background creating contrast between verses.
