9001 standard provides globally recognised set of requirements to apply as a base to build up an overall quality management system incorporating all features of the business such as management responsibility, resource management and all aspects of furnishing the product or service. In addition, ISO 9001 standard can be certified. Meantime, Six Sigma approaches on process management based on its solely defined set of methods and tools which are not able to improve overall quality management system (Hammar n.d.). The eight quality management principles introduced by ISO 9001 can be considered as the base for TQM and determinants for continual improvement. These standards have gained a global reputation as a foundation for the most productive quality management system. Development, amendments, and maintenance of the ISO 9000 family of standards are done by ISO/TC 176 technical committee in every 5 years (ISO 2017). ISO 9000 family consists of three standards: ISO 9000 (Quality management systems - Foundation and vocabulary), ISO 9001(Quality management systems-Requirements), and ISO 9004 (managing for the sustained success of an organisation – A quality management approach). The ISO 9000 standard includes basic concepts, principles, and vocabulary used in all the ISO 9000 family of standards and creates a base for understanding the essentials of quality management required by ISO standards. ISO 9001 standard defines the fundamental requirements for a quality management system and only the standard can be certified by ISO 9000 family of standards. The BS 5750 standard is the first British quality management standard defined and approached on the management of manufacturing process instead of focusing on the manufactured product. Although the ISO 9001:1987 standard followed BS 5750, it came along with three quality management system models. ISO 9001 focused on quality assurance in design, development, production, installation and servicing for companies which were involved in developing new products. The second model, ISO 9002 aimed quality assurance in production and installation, while third model ISO 9003 looked at quality assurance in final inspection and testing (BSI n.d.). However, ISO 9001, ISO 9002, and ISO 9003 were restructured merging three standards into a single standard known as ISO 9001: 2000 in 2000.
