In this essay, we shall compare and contrast two short stories: “A Glow in the Dark” by Gary Paulsen, and “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes. “A Glow in the Dark” is about a man dogsledding through a forest and encountering a strange, eerie light. He then finds out that it is nothing scary. “Thank You M’am” is about a boy named Roger who tried to steal a woman’s pocketbook. The woman ends up feeding him, washing him, and giving him 10 dollars to buy blue suede shoes.
In the "movie adaptation" of a "short story"; "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving the character, Icabod, is a glutton, superstitious, and a learned man. He's a teacher newly present in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Icabod is a huge food lover also known as a glutton. An example of this is when he ate a slice of pie in one whole bite! As a teacher, he checked his student's lunches, but not so they didn't have any junk and only organic, but to see which one of their mothers was the best cook, therefore him to have dinner with them.
In the world of modern film, numerous works are originally literature before they are recreated into films. Some adaptations can enhance the interpretation of its original text or in one’s opinion take away vital aspects of the story. Rod Sterling’s television program, “The Twilight Zone”, has recreated many famous literary works and became a popular in the living rooms of the 1960s. One episode recreates the short story, “The Occurrence on Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce. It tells the story of the man in the 1800s facing the final moments of his life before being hung on a bridge for a crime he committed.
Similarities Between A Possibility of Evil and Pleasantville Over time many authors have written stories about the evil which humans possess and how they deal with it. The short story A Possibility of Evil and the movie Pleasantville share many similarities and differences. A difference between the two stories is how the main symbols portray opposite things. Human nature depicts time as a necessary component of our lives. We learn how to live with time by adjusting our daily routines to something that we believe is not in our power to control. Our understanding of time lies in the theoretical world; Time is not something we can physically prove. The past, present, and future all dictate our continued progress of existence. However, can this progress of time be tampered with? In the movie, La Jetee, the main purpose is to assert the idea that humans are unwilling to comply with the chronological law of time.
I had watched Alfred Hitchcock’s, Vertigo a few times many years ago as I was a huge fan of his work. However, this time, I watched with a different perspective after the readings and videos this week. Laura Mulvey’s theory that we are in a sense forced to watch movies through a male perspective as objects for their pleasure, was written at the height of the feminist movement, noted as the “Male Gaze,” ran prevalent throughout this movie. It is unfortunate that Mulvey, while taken seriously, as her writing still resonates today, was unable to change the ways in which the film industry still views women. The entertainment industry and advertising have only become worse.
