What is Identity? Identity is like a fingerprint; it clearly determines who people are. Identity is something that people are not born with, it is an act people do that classifies their identity. People need to act upon their own choices to determine their own identity rather than being influenced by the choices of others. So, people must follow their own path in order to keep their own unique identity.

Going a bit farther, Peg Streep, a psychologist that studies primarily marital relationships, says that husband and wife relationships, sometimes, can only be understood if one is in the relationship themselves (Streep). However, Tobias Wolff, the author of “Say Yes,” published in 1985, uses symbolism to give his readers a plethora of room for interpretation of the husband and wife’s relationship in this short story, in hopes that many readers are able to relate to the couple’s issues.

In her novel, When the Emperor was Divine, Julie Otsuka explores the relationship between racism and identity. The effects of racism and marginalism can cause a racial group to become their stereotype and lose their individuality. The general physical characteristics of Japanese are portrayed in a negative light in the book; seen as “the face of the enemy”. The family begins to resent their identities and tries to fit in and ends up losing their specialty while also not being normal. By developing the characters of the mother, daughter, father, and son, Otsuka reveals how discrimination can lead to loss of one’s self, often making them fear and worry more frequently.

A person’s nationality is an important part of who he or she is. Where one is born can have an effect on so many aspects of the person they will be. This can include their religion, their physical characteristics, the language they speak, or the persecution they may face because of all those things. The point is that one’s nationality and one’s individuality aren’t separate entities. They add and take away from each other.

A person’s identity is an amalgamation of characteristics that set them apart from others. Everyone is truly unique because no two people possess the same exact beliefs and qualities as another person. Though a person may have grown up in a specific culture, outside factors can contribute to the forming of an individual’s identity which causes a person to diverge from what they knew themselves to be growing up. Andrew Solomon, author of “Son”, puts forth the idea of vertical and horizontal identities. Vertical identity comes from the passing down of expectations and culture from family while horizontal identity comes from outside forces.

The background of my cultural identity I am an African American female but that isn’t all there is to know me for. I am an African American girl who is very interactive with my religion and also my culture. Cultural identity can be hard to explain because some people don’t know what’s really in their culture and they fail to see , and understand it. I know what my cultural identity is because of my ethiopian flag, the baked macaroni, and the movie the lion king.

Here recent, I got asked, “What is your cultural identity?” To be honest with you, I was stumped for a while; finally, things got a little clearer. Your cultural identity is who you are and who you have become. I don’t know about you but I am a strange child, always have been, and forever will be strange.

I am mainly from an American cultural background. My culture has affected many aspects of my life. From the way, I dress to what my beliefs are. I consider my culture a part of my identification. It’s part of who I am and how I live and perceive the world around me.
