Issue of identity is the most discussed issue of today’s world because of globalization process. In the world of literature identity has a great importance, it is literature which made it a very important theme for its reader. It helps it readers in constructing identities because works of literature encourage its reader to see things/issues from their own perspectives (Jonathan Culler 2005: 112). Identity is basically what we call ourselves. Identity always need continual transformation and maintenance (Hegel). (Baldwin) This ongoing change in identity shows that self is an idea, and if someone needs to explore his self he need to have an interaction with the outer world (2004: 224). From past ten years, many researchers/scholars are working …show more content…
The traditional notion of identity was a fixed point which was not changeable from anything, person or environment. It is a universe which is enclosed by self and this self-enclosed discussion of identity expel others. They exclude other groups of people with different identities because they feel some threat from them (119). Idea of fixed identity in the past time or in older theories is also confirmed by Stuart hall. Hall (1989) reaffirmed this idea that identities were fixed in older times, there was stability and fixity. People were not supposed to think about shifting identity. The logic of this discussion posit the idea of stable identity and postulates that identities remain fixed whatever the case is. It is a stable and fixed point in the world (Hall 10). This discourse gives an idea about identity that is connected to certain beliefs and values. It leads toward an idea that identity can never be changed even after bitter experiences in life. Over time an individual is same as he was before twenty years ago, he remains the same.in this discourse of identity, it is related to an idea that safeguards fixity, stillness and authenticity. The identity’s logic is basically called a true self. And it is all about searching one’s true …show more content…
It accepts that the notion of fragmentation affects the formation of identity. The imbalance in the concept of identity took birth from the idea of relationship of the other and self. If there is no other is present, then also the self/ identity cannot be existed. The association with others give birth to the idea of change in identity. Self cannot find meaning without involvement of others. Without other, the self cannot be completed. Though self is not a complete phenomenon, it is not something stable and consistent, rather it something in flux, and constantly in a shifting process. The endless shift in identity empowers self with fluidity. Identity rises as a sort of unorganized place or difficult question which cannot be solved among many separate discourses (Hall
According to “Authenticity and Identity” by the author, Bob Edelstein, he interprets an identity is classified as values that reflect who a person is. A person having a lack of understanding what their own values are called the term “identity crisis” which is explained by Susan Krauss Whitbourne in the article “Are You Having an Identity Crisis?”. According to Shahram Heshmat, the author of “Basic of Identity”, “Lack of a coherent sense of identity will lead to uncertainty about what one wants to do in the life” (1). This states that if a person has this lack of understanding about their values, can’t fulfil their own qualities. This relates to the characters of A Separate Peace.
In the novel Milkweed, by Jerry Spinelli, our main character goes through many identities which change his perspective on life. In this book, he lives in Warsaw, Poland during World War ll and has to overcome many obstacles to survive the harsh living conditions surrounding him. These include starvation, loneliness, and his constant search for his identity. His identity gives him the strength to survive. As the story progressed, it became clear that the key to survival was the need to own some sort of identity to rely on.

She describes the multiple identities of different kinds of people and their significance in the community. She illustrate the how person past, historical event, family background, experiences, and thought of person has impact on the personal identification. Identity speaks of who we are as individuals but it also comes from two different groups: social and cultural. These groups are connected to power, values and ideology. Social identities are related to how we interact with people and how we present ourselves. Meanwhile cultural identities relate to society in whole such as religion, values, etc. In this paper I will talk about the dominant and subordinate identities.
With his newly found self-identity, he learns that he is his own person that lives for himself, and not for a group of people. In brief, someone’s self-identity is realized with the drive of their
The identity a person holds is one of the most important aspects of their lives. Identity is what distinguishes people from others, although it leaves a negative stereotype upon people. In the short story Identities by W.D Valgardson, a middle-aged wealthy man finds himself lost in a rough neighborhood while attempting to look for something new. The author employs many elements in the story, some of the more important ones being stereotype and foreshadow. For many people, their personal identity is stereotyped by society.
In John Knowles’s novel A Separate Peace Identity is shown as what defines us and makes us be placed in other peoples perspectives. An author can use identity to place characters in the readers mind to portray them a certain way, just as John Knowles did in A Separate peace. An identity can be defined as who a person is inside and out.
Introduction The concept of identity has been a notion of significant interest not just to sociologists and psychologists, but also to individuals found in a social context of perpetually trying to define themselves. Often times, identities are given to individuals based on their social status within a certain community, after the assessment of predominant characteristics that said individual has. However, within the context of an ethnicity, the concept identity is most probably applied to all members of the ethnical group, and not just one individual. When there is one identity designated for the entire group, often times the factor of “individuality” loses its significance, especially when referring to the relationship between the ethnic
Identity is something people tend to think of as consistent, however that is far from the case. The Oxford English dictionary states that the definition of identity is “ The characteristics determining who or what a person or thing is.” The allegorical novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding tackles the issue of identity while following young boys from the ages twelve and down as they struggle with remembering their identities when trapped on a deserted island. Identity is affected by the influence of society and how individuals influence society based on their identities. By looking at Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the Stanford Prison Experiment, and Sigmund Freud 's philosophical ideas, it becomes clear that identity is affected by society through peer pressure and social normalities.
Derek Parfit is a British philosopher who specialises in problems of personal identity and he proposes that we separate the notions of identity and survival. He is one of the most prominent philosophers in the struggle to define the self. Parfit’s 1971 essay “Personal Identity” targets two common beliefs which are central to the earliest conversations about personal identity. The first belief is about the nature of personal identity; all questions regarding this must have an answer. Between now and any future time, it is either the case that “I shall exist or I shall not”.
One’s identity crucially depends on being able to communicate with others, be it family members, acquaintances and so on, it is stated that our relationships help to fulfill us and contribute to our identity but do not define them. These exchanges with others are necessary in order to transfer over an accurate interpretation of who we are. It is known that societies come to give their own interpretations to describe groups of individuals which fall out of the realm of what they consider to be “like them” and with it provide a damaging image, in order to prevent a damaging or inaccurate interpretation of who we are then it is not only necessary to be able to communicate what substance lies within our identity, but to be acknowledge that originality and uniqueness within all
For many years, the issue of self-identity has been a problem that philosophers and scholars have been to explain using different theories. The question on self –identity tries to explain the concept of how a person today is different from the one in the years to come. In philosophy, the theory of personal identity tries to solve the questions who we are, our existence, and life after death. To understand the concept of self-identity, it is important to analyze a person over a period under given conditions. Despite the numerous theories on personal identity, the paper narrows down the study to the personal theories of John Locke and Rene Descartes, and their points of view on personal identity.
This thought of theoretical antihumanism clearly rejects the basics of modern philosophy that every human being has an universal essence which is individual. The next course of dislocation to identity is due to Freud’s discovery of unconscious. Individual was considered to be a rational subject with a fixed identity but Freud’s theory said that all desires and identities are due to logic unconscious which is different from logic of reason. Again, the interpretation of his texts has had a great impact on modern thought of identity.
Who are we? The concept of identity is extremely flexible and very slippery. Nonetheless, these is an overwhelming, but understandable fixation upon it. Many people need the concept of identity to secure a position in society and to not only feel connected with others but to feel different, special. Identity is socioculturally constructed.
The issue of identity has been a field of interest for many researchers. They have presented many perspectives on identity, on its shifting nature, politics and complexities. To understand this complexity, it is important to establish opposites like I and him (Said, 1978; Gregory, 1994; Thrift, 1995). Identification of oneself is always related to this fact ‘who I am not’ and other people easily accept the identity of an individual which may not match to his (individual) identity even.
