“A. The Scarlet Letter. Adulteress the great Alpha. Alpha! Adulteress! The new adam and adama!
How does one go on when they are alienated by society and have the constant reminder of their shame? The novel, The Scarlet Letter, tells the trials and tribulations Hester Prynne faces when just that happens to her. It is her scorching red story of transcending beyond societies expectations. The Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. When Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote the novel America was going through a transcendentalist era.
Whenever we need to break unsatisfactory habits, change our ways of thinking, or even do something differently, no matter how hard we try, many of us go back to our old habits/selves. It is important to use all our will and realize when we are referring back to our old ideology and try as much as we can to build a new way of thinking. Through many classic stories, main characters look as if they are on their road to change by starting to build the new, but it is just too hard for them and they want conformity, so they go back to their old selves. According to the article, “Teen Gangstas”, by Raychelle Cassada Lohmann, the plight of Ponyboy Curtis, the protagonist from S.E. Hinton’s classic young adult novel, The Outsiders, will end tragically unless he adopts a pet in which he grows and bond and cares for.
The definition of integrity in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. A character with integrity is willing to sacrifice anything of sentimental or physical value, even their life or reputation, to defend the moral system they govern themselves by. It takes someone of strong character to possess integrity, because the temptation to give in is every so often immensely appealing. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is a character of such integrity, because she upholds her promise with Chillingworth and refuses to flee from the punishment of the scarlet letter “A”.
My best piece that I wrote for this class was called “White Supremacy in Standing Rock” and this piece speaks to all those that are willing to listen. I believe that our life experiences and the media that we are exposed to often shapes many of our core values and beliefs and that’s why as a world, humans are so divided. Everyone has their own “formula” for the way things ought to be and that’s part of what I’m addressing in my essay. I speak on the behalf of those in a similar position I’m in; simply a bystander in the issue at Standing Rock.
Seeking Perfection Many people strive to be the best version of themselves they can be, putting every aspect of their life on hold in order to become as close to the idea of perfection as they can. Although, this idea cannot be reached because it is merely just a thought or obsession in order to succeed. Dr. Jekyll, Victor Frankenstein, and Prometheus all understand this concept very well.
The Question of Identity According to Shahram Heshmat, author of “Basics of Identity”, “Identity is concerned largely with the question: “Who are you?” What does it mean to be who you are? Identity relates to our basic values that dictate the choices we make…”. But sometime within every human being’s life, a situation arises where someone is not able to identify themselves, and because of this they can act strangely and sometimes hostile.
One of the main themes that I caught during this week of studies was that language does create reality. Language also creates gender, which poses a problem for some people. Language also does seclude people as well, for example, when someone says “Ladies and Gentleman” before an act, they are secluding people who do not prefer to label themselves as a lady or gentleman. Language is a very powerful tool if it is used correctly, and from what I have gained from this week is that we still have some obstacles to tackle before language is fully inclusive for everyone. From this week there was a major thing that I did not agree with, and it was how the class was labeling people as “cisgender” from just looking at a picture.
In the same way Franklin composed a list of virtues he should follow to better himself, Thoman Jefferson composed a document declaring independence to better America. Thomas Jefferson is one of the most widely respected figure in American history. He had an intense belief in equal rights and individual freedoms. In “The Declaration of Independence” Jefferson wrote reasons he believed the Americans should feel compelled to declare their independence. He uses parallelism throughout the document to emphasize this important idea and make his argument stronger after each reason he presented.
How does Hawthorne use symbolism in The Scarlet Letter? In this essay I will be talking about what kind of symbolism he used in The Scarlet Letter and why he wrote this novel The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorneuses key symbols to represent themes in the book. The most influential symbol was the Scarlet Letter that Hester wears on her chest all the time. Light and darkness play a role in the symbolic nature of the background and scenery.
People that are isolated and alone are often changed by the crushing weight of their seclusion. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester’s sphere of isolation plays a pivotal role in giving Hester influence in Puritan society which Hawthorne creates by employing feminist ideals in the novel. Since Hester was branded with the Scarlet Letter, she has often struggled with being isolated from the rest of Puritan society. This isolation is often represented by the symbol of spheres in the novel.
A building without a solid foundation will collapse upon itself if it encounters any disturbances. If society acts as a building, then shame and other ways of asserting dominance would act as the foundation. These tools that allow anyone to assert their superiority are a necessary vice America must keep in order to preserve the structural integrity of our nation. Some may claim they use shame as a tool to correct other people’s behavior, but the real reason for the use of shame is for its underlying effect of asserting dominance over one another, which is an essential behavior both animals and humans use to keep society organized.
