Twain employs the use of figurative language – specifically personification and similes – to help create imagery. All of these things contribute to Twain’s description of the natural world. When Twain uses personification to describe nature, and compares it with the utilization of similes to describe how the inside world is affected by nature, it creates imagery that helps the reader understand the mood. These things help Twain achieve his purpose of describing the natural world for the reader.
This river is the main setting because it was important for Jim and Huck and it was their escape to the world the left behind and to the new lives ahead. The river represents freedom for Huck and Jim and it also symbolizes time. Twain’s attitude against racism and slavery is that he is against it. The read could infer this when there were scenes that showed Huck feeling bad for Jim when Jim was in trouble.

1. Twain’s main purpose in “Corn-Pone Opinions” is to explain how human nature determines what is favored in the society. In paragraph 9, Twain states, “It is our nature to conform; it is a force which not many can successfully resist” (718). Since the birth, each individual are instilled with this conformity that cannot be ignored. Twain wants his readers to realize that the reason behind conformity is to obtain other people’s approval, even if the individual pretends to be someone else.
Mary Oliver’s poem “Crossing the Swamp” shows three different stages in the speaker's life, and uses personification, imagery and metaphor to show how their relationship with the swamp changed overtime. The swamp is personified, and imagery is used to show how frightening the swamp appears before transitioning to the struggle through the swamp and ending with the speaker feeling a sense of renewal after making it so far into the swamp. Finally, metaphor is used to compare the speaker, who has experienced many difficulties to an old tree who has finally begun to grow. Mary Oliver uses the literary element of personification to illustrate the speaker and the swamp’s relationship. She portrays the swamp as alive in lines 4-8 “ the nugget of dense sap, branching/ vines, the dark burred/ faintly belching/ bogs.”
When the characters undertake these journeys, they anticipate thrilling experiences but instead have disappointing realizations. For instance, Huck expects the whole trip to be lazily floating down the river, smoking, fishing, and talking to Jim (Twain 130). However, this illusion is soon shattered. As they continue south, Huck encounters many different communities and types of people. Their behavior leads him to an unexpected conclusion about society: “Well, it made me sick to see it…human beings can be awful cruel to one another” (245).

Throughout the text twain establishes a love for the beauty and features of the river; however, The text transitions this voice to one in which only the purpose of the river is seen. The river becomes linked to twain through these viewpoints. This allows for a Pedagogy to develop in which a Master-Student relationship is created. To create the pedagogical link between twain and the river we must first begin to construct the context, which through irony the text begins to craft the master and novice perspective.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay: The river in the novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a significant place where rules of society are forgotten and Huck and Jims relationship is built. While on the river, Huck seems to put aside everything he has learned from society and forms a strong relationship with a black slave, all in his willing. Society has no influence on Huck while traveling on the river which allows his friendship with Jim expand overtime.
Following the conclusion of Pudd’nhead Wilson, a novel written by Mark Twain in 1894, but taking place in the 1850s, it is obvious that the book was inundated by a myriad of differing themes. However, there is a theme that stands out the most in terms of the most influential message conveyed by Twain. This theme is that deception and foolishness, two themes that go hand in hand, do not have preferable repercussions. In recognizing these themes, I was able to choose one specific scene from the novel that truly represents these two themes. The scene that most symbolizes the backfiring of deception and the disadvantages of foolishness is in the scene where Tom gets sold down the river.

Throughout the story, Mark Twain uses Huck to suggest that “natural life” is more desirable. The entire plot of this novel revolves around Huck and Jim floating down the Mississippi River on a raft and going on adventures each time they come to shore. However, as the story goes on, the reader realizes that when Huck and Jim get off the raft, they constantly meeting criminals and other bad people. Life on the raft is as peaceful as it gets, but when Huck is ashore, he meets slimy people, including the Duke and the King, some of the people involved in the feud, and Colonel Sherburn and Boggs. Huckleberry Finn and Jim also witness some extreme violence, including tarring, feathering, lynching, theft, murder, and quite simply, a lot of death.
