Infrastructure in Aceh was and remained poor. 25 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line. They were rich in natural resources however with poor infrastructure and public services and centralized authorities added with poverty and lack of opportunities have been the factors of the conflict. Some of these factors led to several effects which are the unemployment and poverty especially in rural areas, prompted the escalation of the conflict in the early 2000s. The trends worsen with the conflict still on going.
