As the readings so often portrayed, the transition into middle schooling can be quite a rough event for students. In fact, a study conducted by Waxman and Huang (1998) found that middle schoolers harboured the most negative classroom perception when compared with the views of elementary and high-school students. This semester’s readings have repeatedly shown that the more independent learning style of middle school can overwhelm students; in fact I myself remember being anxious about having to attend different classrooms in my first year of middle school. Compound these classroom structure changes with rapid physical and cognitive development and it becomes clear that there are great challenges to be had in educating the middle years student.
The articles “Technology” by Neil Postman and “I’m So Totally, Digitally, Close to You” by Clive Thompson, both set to address the role of technology in society and debate whether the internet has an effect on the community. Does community exist on the internet? Thompson argues that the internet, social media more specifically, provides a “dynamic of small town life”. With the involvement of social media in the twenty first century, does the definition of community adapt to this new phenomenon. The possibility of social media being a valid medium of which communities can thrive is likely because the internet resembles aspects and characteristics of the traditional community and the existence of the physical world and the virtual world are
As I walk out of Mr.Fiedler’s fourth hour social class, I wonder what kind of mood the evil Mrs.Berntson will be in today. I turn the corner and see all of the seventh graders come out room 224 screaming in fright. Oh great, I thought to myself. I approached the door and carefully step into the classroom making sure nothing jumps out at me. I step into the classroom only to see my witch looking teacher with black hair and warts covering her face standing in the corner of the room.
Social constructivism and psychology have come at odds in recent years, as social constructivism has increasingly been used as the be-all-end-all explanation by third-wave feminists for different aspects of human sexuality and sexual behavior, despite proven scientific explanations that debunk and even contradict such a view. In the continuation of the everlasting nature vs. nurture debate, the feminists assert that society, nurture, is far more significant in determining sexual behavior than genetic or innate biological factors. These modern-day constructivists are as close to the Tabula Rasa/blank slate perspective as can be, and assert this as the truth, even when science shows otherwise.
Early childhood education generally means an education before the child start of formal schooling or before the age they required to attend the school. It is crucial stage of life in development the physical, intellectual, emotional and social lifestyle of the children. For the basic education method the approach must base on their prior knowledge and practice is called “constructivism”. Social constructivism is the one of the theories of learning and pedagogy that had the utmost impact on tutoring and curriculum design because they seem to be the most conducive to integration into current educational approaches.
The purpose of this essay is to acknowledge the conditions that impact upon Indigenous students’ education. This will be reached through analysis of the concepts of race, racism and whiteness in Australia. These key understandings of Indigenous students’ will be incorporated into my own critical pedagogy in order to demonstrate how I would teach for reconciliation in my classroom.
"Technology is like art. It is a soaring exercise of the human imagination". Like everything in this world that has its good and bad effects on us, technology does too. How we use technology is important in determining what results it would bring us. Nowadays, technology is heavily used for educational purposes. Integrating technology in education can be extremely beneficial. It can be a useful method for the students and their teachers, which improves both their skills. In addition, being active on the Internet when learning can make students and teachers’ academic journey easier. There is a lot of evidence that proves how useful technology is for both students and their instructors. This paper attempts to show that using the Internet allows
Education is a huge issue that not only affects kids and their parents, but their community as well. Schools teach young kids to become the next generation of engineers, technicians, and political leaders, working towards creating a better future for their country and their community. Teachers have the unique job of creating the future leaders of the world, and preparing them for both college and life beyond, by putting a special push towards math and science, the so-called “foundation” of our society. The hard truth is, no one can be anything they want to be. Some people are simply not cut out to be engineers, doctors, or psychologists. Modern day schooling forces students to fit a mold only a select few can fill by creating too much structure and having an overbearing emphasis on math and science, when other, less structured extracurricular activities can promote respect, discipline, and teamwork.
Today 's society is a network society. It is a product of the digital revolution and certain sociocultural changes, that occurred within these last twenty years. It is a society build around personal and organizational networks; that are based on digital communication by the use of the internet. Networks are international and know no frontiers. Furthermore, this brought forward new ways of communication, where people from every corner of the world are interconnected and make them reachable in every instant; thus, making the network society a global one. This results into " a dramatic increase in sociability, but a different kind of sociability, facilitated and dynamized by permanent connectivity and social networking on the web."(Castells, 2010)
Declared in The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UN, 1948), education is recognized as a fundamental human right and a key component contributing to the development of societies. Yet there are many people on earth have not been able to get educated. In order to solve the problem, it is proposed that all education (including primary, secondary and higher education) should be free all over world and governments should be those funding the tuition fees. This paper critically hightlights the significances and also rebut the objection of free education.
“Behind every school and every teacher is a set of related beliefs - a philosophy of education – that influences what and how students are taught. A philosophy of education represents answers to questions about the purpose of schooling, a teacher’s role and what should be taught and by what methods.” (Teacher, Schools and Society. 2005).
Those in favor of online learning would argue that communication online is possible and just as valuable of an interaction. As much as this might be true, it is undeniable that the online platform allows for individuality to blossom in a way it would not in a classroom, whereas the main form of interaction is written textfrom independent locations. Students are physically isolated from the dynamics of communication in class, whether with their peers or teachers. It is a known fact that school, after the child’s first years spent with the family, is an institution of socialization where the child learns the norms and habits, customs and values necessary for participating within our society. The role of school as an institution which provides a community to develop socially cannot be taken for granted.Additionally, school is the
The students that I have are all second graders ranging from 7-8 years old. The students that I have are all African American. I am a Caucasian female so it is nice to teach students that are a different race than I am because I know that all students are not going to be the same as I am. The teacher told me that this group of kids does really well in class but they score poorly on tests. I have one student that is very hard on themselves when they get an answer wrong so when teaching I try to make things as positive as possible. I have taught a Social Studies lesson, a math Lesson, and an English Language Arts lesson. The social studies lesson was a hard lesson to teach because they do not teach Social Studies in Raytown, the kids were unfocused and I feel like the lesson would have been better if they had an Idea about what was going on but I tied the best I could to build some background knowledge.
