The impacts of climate change and its associated extreme weather events are obvious in both developed and developing countries. They constitute a major threat to socio-economic development programs in every country. Climate change is a global phenomenon and it has no regard for national boundaries. The increasing occurrence and intensity of the extreme weather events associated with climate change such as flooding, drought, storms, desertification, increasing rainfall variability, among others are a great problem to mankind. It has been reported in the literature that the distribution of the precipitation over time, as well as over the distance is very complex and irregular. Such irregularity is especially pronounced with respect to the occurrence …show more content…
In other words, desertification can be defined as the process of land degradation which involves a continuous change from very little to very severe degradation of the plant and soil resources as a result of human activities (Dregne 1986). Barrow (1999) defined desertification as a process in which the ecosystem losses its capacity to maintain and repair itself. Desertification has deprived farmers in a number of ways which are deposition of sand dunes, insufficient water for agriculture lands and these result to low income on the part of the farmers. The impacts of desertification can be measured by the reduction in the productivity of plants and the undesirable alteration in the biomass and the diversity of fauna and flora, increased soil deterioration. One of the most major problems facing the northern Nigeria is desertification and it has an awful consequence on their economic. Efforts have been made both at national and international to curb the impacts of desertification but still desertification persists (Mohammed …show more content…
Humans tend to categorize storms according to what we see as the weather's most damaging or impressive aspect; hence, we refer to snowstorms, thunderstorms, ice storms, hailstorms, windstorms, and rainstorm and so on. The huge sum of money and number of lives lost to wind and rainstorm hazards in Nigeria is an indication that wind-related hazards are a major problem. This calls for the attention of the Federal, State, and Local Governments to come up with adequate developmental policies and planning that will focus on raising awareness on the danger of wind hazards and the necessary preparedness to curtail same. (Cotton, et al.,
For the OECO the desertification is process of pressure, state and response (PSR) while the FAO, UNCCD and European commission for dry land (12) look the desertification process as results of five steps: Driving forces, pressure, state, impact and responses (DPSIR).
What is meant by ‘statistical infrequency’ as a definition of abnormality? [2 marks] Gavin describes his daily life. ‘I sometimes get gripped with the thought that my family is in danger. In particular, I worry about them being trapped in a house fire. I now find that I can only calm myself if I check that every plug socket is switched off so an electrical fire couldn’t start.
Describe and evaluate two definitions of abnormality [16 marks] One definition of abnormality comes from statistical infrequency. We typically define what is seen as ‘normal’ by referring to statistical values. For example, from statistical evidence, we can be informed of things such as the average shoe size of 11-year olds, the average age of a first-time mother, and so on. As we can define what is ‘normal’ through statistics, we can also define what is abnormal. For instance, it is seen as abnormal for a first-time mother to be over the age of 40 or under the age of 20.
The targets for this goal are going to be very difficult to measure as climate change is constantly evolving and data will therefore never be specific. “Measuring resilience and adaptive capacity to climate hazards and natural disasters in all countries” is going to be more complex than just collecting the occurrences of these climatic events. Similarly, every government is capable of observing and collecting data on their progress when considering the implementation of measures in target 13.2 and of education programs and the organization of awareness campaigns in target 13.3. However, the difficulty of measuring these targets is that their assessment is based on subjectivity, except for their financial aspect.
Community health nursing is directed toward improving the health outcomes of the community through the prevention of disease as well as handling crises in the case of a natural disaster. In the following discussion, I will describe the stages to preparing for a tornado because of the potential of happening my local area and the public nurse’s role during each of the stages. Managing a disaster starts with the first stage which is the prevention phase. The demographics of local area need to be identified by trending the vulnerable groups so that extra attention and care can be provided.
he Great Blizzard of 88 Our natural hazard is blizzards. Blizzards are a severe snowstorm with high winds and low visibility. Blizzards can form when warm air must rise over cold air. There are two ways this can occur when winds pulls cold air toward the equator from the poles and it brings warm air toward the poles from the equator. Cold and warm air brought together forms and precipitation occurs.
Climate Change’s Effects on The Mojave Desert The problem known as climate change is causing a domino effect of devastating blows to the Mojave Desert’s ecosystem. Resulting in damage to plants and animals. Given this, if not changed now the effects will damage humans too. Sadly, it starts the pain by first taken out the most valuable source to any living creature: water.
During the Galveston hurricane the city of oleander was filled with people that were on vacation. Good weather forecast things didn’t exist at the time, but the U.S. Weather people gave out a warnings telling people to move to higher ground. Even though these were ignored by many vacationers and residents alike. A 15-foot
Annotated Bibliography: How Climate Change Is Affecting Our Planet Controversy statement: Climate change is been debated for over centuries now. People all around the world are taking action and reducing burning fossils to minimize the gasses in the atmosphere. Many people believe that climate change doesn't exists. But there are a lot of controversial topics that proves that climate change is real. In my opinion, climate change is slowly killing us and destroying our planet.
However, history has shown the consequences of defying it. The Dust Bowl occurred because farmers plowed up sod across the high plains when precipitation was high. This resulted in dust storms that tore across the plains-- causing mass migration. Similarly, Santiago and the caravan’s journey through the desert show many implications of sustainability. When the nights were bitter, “the travelers arranged the animals in a circle at night, sleeping together in the center”
In these day, hurricane is the one of the most terrifying disaster that occur on many countries in this world, it can cause damage and harmful to people. Hurricane is a huge storm that form above the ocean then move to the land and we call it “hurricane” when the wind speeds reach up to 74 mph. However, these storm are call in different names depends on the location that they occur. For example, we call it “typhoon” in Pacific Ocean, “cyclone” in Indian Ocean, etc. In these essay, we will point on the two-main cause and two-main negative effect of the hurricane and some idea of the basic preparation.
Desertification and climate change in drier areas causes severe water shortages and even droughts. Western culture has created an increase in urbanisation, population and industrialisation,
The impact of climate change is being felt throughout the world; however, the situation is more pronounced in developing countries because many households, social groups and regions have a limited capacity to adapt to climate variability and change (UNFCCC, 2007; IPCC 2007). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2007:6) defined climate change as any change in climate over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activity. The (UNFCCC 2007) espoused that agricultural production on the African continent relies primarily on rainfall. As such, any interruption in rainfall pattern and intensity will adversely affect the poor, predominantly the smallholder farmers (ibid).
Deserts cover 20 percent of the earth’s land surface, which is close to thirty million square miles. Deserts are large and dry regions that receive very little amount of rainfall per year, have a lot of bare soil and low vegetation cover. Despite the common misconception of all deserts being dry and hot, there are cold deserts as well. Areas covered in ice or snow, with limited vegetation plantation, are sometimes called 'cold deserts '. However, in this essay, we will be discussing on survival in hot desert.
Researches show that the average temperature of the planet has been changed during the last decades, as a result, many problems join with it and climate change is considered as the biggest problem around the world. Climate change is one of the results of global warming and it has so many negative disadvantage impacts on earth, including; increasing the events of natural
