In the late 19th century, Western Imperialism gave rise to movements of resistance and independence. Decolonization movements gained importance after World War II, not only because the wars sparked nationalism in the colonies. However, imperial powers weakened by the war were less able to suppress colonial independence. Many methods were used to gain independence. In some cases, fighting was to achieve independence from a colonizer such as France. However, in other cases decolonization was used to overthrow a government that was already independent, but perceived to be under Western imperial control. Although many world leaders support decolonization, others saw it as a threat to their own power and influence. Nonetheless, decolonization benefited …show more content…
According to the Vietnam Declaration of Independence, although the Declaration of the French Revolution states that everyone is equal and free. Yet the French disregarded this abuse of liberty and forced imperialism on Vietnam (Document 2). The Vietnamese Declaration of Independence was a direct response to the French Revolution Declaration. It was a response to the French not applying liberty and equality principles to the colonies. This inspired the Vietnamese to fight for freedom and autonomy from French rule. Additionally, another Enlightenment idea that inspired leaders to promote decolonization was freedom of expression. Mohandas Gandhi in his "Quit India Speech" states, while the French and Russian revolutions fought for freedom, liberty and more, they used violence when the same thing could have been achieved with a non-violent protest. Freedom of expression needs to be respected (Document 1). India saw the success of the French and Russian revolutions and wanted to emulate them in their own fight for freedom in their own way. Gandhi encouraged citizens to express their thoughts and feelings and bring awareness. It can be concluded that most leaders sought decolonization thanks to Enlightenment ideas. Ideas such as liberty, equality, and freedom to express inspired them to fight for a cause in their own countries. It was …show more content…
This was in direct contrast to colonial powers' oppressive rule systems. They wanted to create systems that reflect these countries' values and beliefs. This desire was often embraced by other countries and organizations. They wished to govern themselves and were determined to succeed. According to a speech made by Sukarno the Indonesian president, everyone is united and determined to end inequality, restore peace and stability and rule their country alone (Document 5). It was evident in the way these countries worked to overthrow the oppressive rule of the colonial powers and establish their own governments. This desire was shared by many countries and organizations, which saw the importance of self-determination and the need to end oppression and inequality. Additionally, countries worked deliberately for independence so they could run their own government. According to the Common Program of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the People’s Republic of China organizes its own government. Democracy is the political foundation of the republic. China is devoted to unity, independence, and peace (Document 3). The conference was designed to ensure that the Chinese people had a say in the formation of their government. It also ensured that it would respect its citizens' rights and freedoms. It outlined a vision of a unified, independent, and peaceful China. It also
The era following the Second World War was marked by a dramatic change in the world order as countries across Africa, Asia, and Central America underwent independence movements that completely upended their political systems. The war had left the world in shambles and the widespread beliefs in Social Darwinism and the concept of a ‘superior race’ that were originally used to justify European rule in foreign areas were challenged. The political climate also changed over the span of World War 2, especially in the weakening of the imperial power’s rule as well as the newfound sense of nationalism that had been sparked in dozens of countries. People wanted change to happen in their country and supported leaders and organizations that pursued independence
How could these documents be used to explain a driving force behind European imperialism in Africa? These document could be used to explain through a few of different things like technological advancements, African colonies and raw materials they had, and economic factors. These are three reasons to help explain the driving force behind European imperialism and also could answer questions that go along with the main question like why the Europeans imperialized Africa. Why did it have to be Africa at all? These are all questions and ways to explain the main question.
This is easily exemplified by the fact that Haiti and the United States were revolting against large European powers, France and England respectively. As with any revolution, both of these states had a want for freedom greater than the monarchy they were placed under. As is most likely inferred, these revolutions were the causes of heaps of unresolved tensions. These tensions started off with the often unfair policing of their regions by their colonizers. Not only were these former colonies unhappy, but they were also being killed by France or England for their resistance.
Based on the documents provided, it can be argued that the Europeans were unwelcome and sparked a great disturbance among the African people during new imperialism period all across Africa based on the following perspectives from documents 4 and 9 which demonstrate brutal violence towards Africans, documents 6 and 7 which call for help to remove the presence of the Europeans, and documents 2 and 3 represent how these Africans state wish to avoid being under European power. Throughout the history of European colonization, there is evidence that the Europeans have disrupted and separated majority of the African continent. Based on the documents provided, each document individually states their own problems with the European occupying African
Have you ever wondered how a king can be so terrible that his own people want him dead? The French Revolution stemmed from people's demands that were influenced by Enlightenment ideals. These ideals were the positions and thoughts the Enlightenment philosophers supported. With the influence of Enlightenment ideals people wanted more. John Locke, an English philosopher, had ideas that influenced revolutions, more notably, the French Revolution.
This, as well as the consistent spread of Enlightenment ideas and the Scientific Revolution inspired both nations to revolutionize in the name of freedom
Despite imperialism being unconstitutional and undemocratic, American Imperialism was an economic necessity to further commerce. China had all the customers, and for the U.S. to be economically successful they needed to improve their naval power. This need brought on the Panama Canal, as Roosevelt wanted to save both time and money for commercial and military shipping. On top of this, the U.S. also took interest in Cuba -- not for territory, but for the trade and military opportunities that would spring up. From aiding the Cubans, the U.S. gained territory in Puerto Rico (which was useful as a naval base), Guam, and the Philippines.
But, the figures of the Enlightenment have shaken the very foundation of nations, and different governments have come to power. New and bright leaders seek power and glory. An imperialist fervour has descended upon the peoples of Altera, as nations scramble to build their empires, competing with their rivals for land and resources. In this brutal world, survival of the fittest is an absolute truth.
Chasity L Wireman (7178872) Dr. Michael A. Lazarus HIS 102-W1: Western Civilization II 12/17/17 How race justified the imperial conquest within the nineteenth century The 19th century was known as the peak of Imperialism. Countries within Europe grew more occupied in the “Scramble for Africa”. Other nations including Britain, Spain, France, Germany and many others raced to try and conquer Africa. The imperialism within Africa had many different effects on soon to be conquered country.
During the 1800’s and early 1900’s the world was substantially controlled by the European empires. Imperialism was Europe's main plan of action to acquire more territory. Therefore the Industrial Revolution benefited Europe tremendously giving them new machinery, technology, and production on a larger scale. The causes of World War I were Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, and Imperialism. The most important cause was Imperialism because tensions began to rise as countries competed for territory and economic power across the world.
Imperialism is the process in which a country extends their power over another. In the 19th century, industrialization occurred, causing specific countries to exploit other countries for their natural resources in order to maximize their profits. Because of this, continents such as Asia and Africa became imperialized. During the 20th century, multiple wars broke out, in which the imperial countries demanded service from the imperialized countries. This played a large factor in the imperialized countries wanting to become self determined.
From the moment settlers came to America and took over inhabited land, they used imperialism to achieve what they wanted. However this would be far from the last time America used imperialistic qualities to attain their goals. This event merely sparked the United States’ path of expansion and world domination in the 19th and 20th century. American imperialism became a significant part of the nation, and led the United States to expand its territory, destroy traditional cultures, and grow its economic and political power worldwide. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, several factors played a role in the continuous and overpowering imperialism by the United States.
During the Imperialism era, America acted as a World Leader. The Imperialism era was an era that America started to act as its own country and this era was when America really started to influence the world. The begging of this era was with our found father George Washington as he made a farewell address, in that address he basically stated that America should be an isolated country and that they the people should not interfere with wars with other countries, and that the trade between countries should be equal. This is proof that America was a World Leader during Imperialism.
Within the period of 1750 to 1914, changes were taking place around the world. New empires and nations began growing and expanding their territory, and as a result of these actions, wars, bankruptcy, and rebellions became more common. An example is the American Revolution, in which the American colonists, who were influenced by new philosophies and the sense of nationalism, fought and gained their independence from Britain. This revolution eventually inspired others throughout the world as it was successful in gaining the colonies independence from a powerful European empire. Those revolutions include the Haitian and French Revolution.
The desire to achieve glory and success for one’s country caused countries
