First of all, I am for replacing detention because many kids will not change their behavior of being bad and will instead keep doing what they are doing because they are so angry. In Anita Garland’s essay “Let’s Really Reform Our Schools” the author begins by telling us that high schools in the U.S are failure. Garland argues that “the pressure to look fashionable and act cool outweighs any concern for learning.” She tells us that current safety measures like metal detectors and security guards have not be enough to beat the conflict of criminals in school. She claims that school ideas have to be reconstructed. Anita Garland tells us that the essential change to school structure should be school attendance; stop making it mandatory.
The average person spends 18,720 hours in “prison”- I mean school , and that's not including the 9360 spending doing homework. That means a person spends almost 28,080 hours of their life dedicated to kindergarten through senior year. That gives a student a lot of time to learn and develop as a person, but do the students really learn? Many students throughout the novel spend their time in detention, hoping that they self discipline themselves. Even though Edwin tells the truth to his teachers about why he is late to class, they show no compassion for him and he is sent to “detention for a week” (43). Teachers hardly hear students out and are quick to conclude that detention will solve the matter. I believe that foster care system should be changed for the better of the child only because i know that most kids started off with a bad life and to top it off they have to be in a foster home and most disagreeable kids can just go to a juvenile detention center if not adopted. When you hear someone say I'm going to yoga class you tend to think it’s a woman, but that shouldn't be the case because this past semester I have taken yoga class and I'm a 20 year old college guy, not your typical yoga type, I tend t be a little on the hot head side sometimes but taking this class has helped tremendously with many situations, such as stress, frustration and aggravation. Honestly, this class was not really my thing I wasn't too excited about it when I heard I was put into it but it does help with my peace of mind. I typically have certain goals or at least a purpose for taking a class like this but this one I didn't really have an actual reason to take it, it was something that I really thought would be completely useless too me but it's improved my mental and physical attitude toward most things.
These skills are very important in solving the future problems. School is a place that can hold a lot of tension and pressures for kids of all ages. It is also one of the first places (after the home) where a child begins learning how to interact with peers. This can, of course, lead to many conflicts. In order to help students not turn into bullies or become paralyzed with shyness, teaching methods of conflict resolution is a great tool.
